TAB: #weekendwankshop177 on instagram! www.facebook.com/unclebeneller instagram @BenEllerGuitars Skype lessons? email [email protected] yo guys! By request, Uncle Ben Eller here is gonna break down something you all have been asking for for a long time... John 5's signature banjo guitar rolls! Most of you all know John 5 from his solo band, plus his time playing live and in the studio with Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, and many others. On Weekend Wankshop 177, i'm going to be giving you all a lesson on that hillbilly hootenanny HeeHaw style series of telecaster banjo rolls in the key of G that we've heard John play in numerous interviews (like the Hello Kitty guitar styles video). This is definitely influenced by John's love of HeeHaw and classic country and bluegrass music. Its all played fingerstyle, and has some of the hallmark progressions of old timey bluegrass tunes. There are two different picking patterns, so be sure to learn them both and apply them to chord progressions and arpeggios of your own! Ibanez Talman Kemper Profiler

http://www.andrewwasson.com/ Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers questions from off of his Guitar Blog website... Q). I was wondering if you could show some licks that are using the, "Banjo-Style," roll technique. I like the sound of them in Country and Rockabilly music. I only know two simple banjo-roll licks, but what I'm really interested in from you Andrew, are a collection of different kinds so that I can practice this. Thanks in advance. Lloyd -- Louisville, KY. USA A). These guitar licks sound really cool when you get them up to speed. Their name comes from the way they can make a standard electric guitar come across sounding in a similar kind of way as a banjo, or a steel guitar might sound. When first trying them, it might take awhile before you're really going to nail-down their sound. But, after you start getting them up to speed, they'll take on a new life all of their own. In the video I zoom-in on the guitar fret-board, and demonstrate some examples I put together for the video for you to practice at home. As always, Thanks for writing in! Learn How To Play Banjo With Tony Trischka http://tonybanjoschool.com/ In this sample lesson, Tony Trischka discusses elements that were mastered distinctly by Earl Scruggs. Earl Scruggs is a North Carolina born musician who pioneered and conquered the technique of three finger banjo picking style, which is now called the Scruggs Style. He rose to fame when he was hired by another famous bluegrass musician, Bill Monroe, to fill the banjo spot in his band, The Blue Grass Boys. His celebrity really took off after his performance became the theme song for a network television hit, The Beverly Hillbillies, in the 1960s. Having grown up in a musical environment with his father and all his siblings playing the banjo and guitar, with his mother on the organ, he has been making music since the very beginning. He made his mark in the world of bluegrass music before his passing in 2012. Tony Trischka is here to pass on the wisdom and the music of the great legend, Earl Scruggs. Tony offers his enormous talent and expertise to teach banjo through hundreds of video lessons that range from a Beginner, just picking up the banjo, to Virtuoso. The sample video is only a small portion of those hundreds of videos. In this short sample, you can see how carefully Tony Trischka breaks down every component of this style. Hundreds of these videos can be available to you when you sign up to join the Online Banjo School with Tony Trischka. The topics are not limited to this. You will also gain access to some behind the scenes jam sessions with Tony and some of the other teachers in the blue grass school. Through school exclusive events, you may even get a chance to jam out with these masters! Check out free sample lessons at the link and find out more! http://tonybanjoschool.com/

Go to 11:51 to see it played all the way through without stopping. Here I take you step by step through the popular banjo tune "Dueling Banjos," originally called "Feuding Banjos" by Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith, in which he and Don Reno both played banjos -- Arthur on plectrum and Don on 5-string. They traded some incredible hot licks at a fast pace throughout the tune. Here, I follow the more recognized "Deliverance" format, starting slow, then building up speed. Tab and play-along tracks at different speeds can be found at my website, littlerockguitar.com. In this free video guitar lesson we will take a look at a hybrid picking technique that creates the illusion of playing fast banjo rolls on the guitar. Most of the work to accomplish this sound belongs to the picking hand, however, there are some relativity large stretches that you will also have to get together in the fret hand as well. This technique is used very commonly in country music by such players as Albert Lee, Brad Paisley and Brent Mason. More and more though, you will find banjo rolls in rock and metal styles as well. The exciting sound they create can work well in just about any musical style. :) If you enjoyed this lesson or any of the 100's of other free video guitar lessons at http://www.GuitarLessons365.com, please consider supporting the site by becoming a Premium Subscriber or by making a small donation. No banjo tune is "set in stone." Every banjo tune (or tune on any other instrument) can be improvised upon. But you need your own "bag of tricks" to draw from to make that happen. Here I found the opportunity to pass along some of my favorite banjo licks to you, within the framework of "Dueling Banjos", put together in a way that (hopefully) makes musical sense, set to a simple chord pattern. In my version I start off slow (like the movie version), with guitar and banjo swapping licks, then gradually build up speed into the "fast part," then go back to the swapping part, then into another fast part, then finish with an ending similar to the movie ending. I feel like I do this in the same spirit as the original 1954 version from Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith and Don Reno. They used it as an opportunity to show off their hot licks on the 5-string and plectrum banjos (so it really was "Feuding Banjos"). I don't really know many hot licks, but I hope you'll find this a useful tool for building your improvisational bag of tricks. Tab and play-along tracks at faster speeds are available at my site, littlerockbanjo.com. I have posted this video for instructional (teaching) purposes only and, in my opinion, it constitutes fair use: "The fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright."
