Despite a mixed mood at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show, German carmaker Volkswagen now sells every second car in China, and BMW is also looking at expanding its investment. Both VW and BMW are focusing on electric and self-driving cars. But the fat years with double-digit growth rates for the car industry in China are over for the time being. Sales fell for the first time in 2018, and last March sales plummeted. Mass manufacturers such as Volkswagen, the market leader, have been hardest hit. Crash Test Compilation: Chinese car brands under crash test scrutiny - will China prevail? Chinese car brands and manufacturers are put to the test: Chery, Geely, BYD, FAW and Brilliance. The crash tests in this compilation video are known as controlled frontal-impact and side-impact tests. Frontal-impact is what most people initially think of when asked about a crash test. These are usually head on impacts upon a solid concrete wall at a specified speed, but can also be vehicle-vehicle tests. Impacts are done at high speed and filmed from various angles. Filming by high speed camera can assist when reviewing the crash test in detail, frame by frame. Crash tests usually involve destructive testing of a vehicle and is performed to verify the safety and, crashworthiness and crash compatibility. Other videos you might be interested in... BEIJING/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Car makers in China will face more fierce competition this year, after a tough 2018 when the world’s biggest auto market contracted for the first time in more than two decades, the country’s top auto industry association said on Monday. FILE PHOTO: Newly manufactured cars are seen at the automobile terminal in the port of Dalian, Liaoning province, China July 9, 2018. REUTERS/Stringer/File Photo Companies such as homegrown Geely (0175. China is now the world’s largest car market, from nearly 6 million units in 2005 to a predicted 26 million in 2016, but it’s a challenging industry for brand owners facing over-saturation in some categories and a fight for growth in the lower tiers. This week on “Thoughtful China,” Wunderman’s Bryce Whitwam identifies six trends changing China’s car market.

FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus024054 Another Chinese automaker is showing vehicles this year at the auto show in Detroit, raising the perennial question about when these companies might sell in the United States. The answer: Years from now, according to carmakers and industry observers alike. Chinese manufacturers have announced plans over the past decade to export to the U.S. only to postpone them when faced with passing U.S. safety and emissions tests and building a dealer network. They also must overcome big hurdles in convincing U.S. car buyers that Chinese cars have the quality they demand. Still, Chinese companies remain interested in eventually selling in the prestigious - and potentially profitable - market. Chinese companies are in their first decade displaying vehicles at the North American International Auto Show. In 2006, a lone Geely Automobile sedan sitting outside the main exhibit halls marked the first time a Chinese automaker showed a car in Detroit. Last year, the Chinese companies skipped Detroit. This year, Guangzhou Automobile is showing vehicles including a fuel-efficient small SUV that will be sold in China starting in April and parts of the Middle East, Africa, South America and eastern Europe in late 2015. The company known as GAC, said 2017 is a possible year it would like to enter the U.S. market, but there is no concrete timetable. Wu Song, GAC Group general manager, said in an interview that the company likely would start sales in up to three states, building awareness of its brand and vehicles. In 2007, Chrysler and Chery Automobile, China's biggest independent brand, announced plans to produce a Chinese-manufactured small car for export to the U.S. as soon as 2010 under Chrysler's Dodge brand. They ended the venture because of the global financial crisis. Other companies pegged 2009 as a year where Chinese-made vehicles would be offered for sale in the U.S., but that year passed without any coming on the market. Elsewhere, Chery and brands including Great Wall Motors export sedans, minivans and SUVs to Russia, Algeria, Chile and other developing markets. Still, Chinese automakers mostly sell at home, where the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers reports they had 41.2 percent of the market in 2014. They're being pressured in China by established global automakers, the same companies that dominate the U.S. market. It's the world's top market for electronic vehicles by a long shot, but big names like Nissan and Tesla aren't the reason why China sells more EVs than the rest of the world combined. Chinese drivers are flocking to dealerships selling local brands which may have much shorter ranges, but they're vastly cheeper. Take the Chery eQ , a battery-powered two-door on sale at just $8,500 dollars, thanks to generous government subsidies that knock off two-thirds of its retail cost. Buying an eco-frienly car also makes it much easier to get a license plate in China, as officials come down hard on gas guzzlers in the war on pollution. It's all good news for local manufacturers, but cracking this rapidly-gowing market isn't so easy for outsiders. Non-Chinese companies can only get in on in on joint ventures with Chinese parnters, and even then, it's hard for them to compete with local producers on price. Still, big global names like GM are determined to make an impact on the Chinese market, and they're throwing billions of dollars at making it happen. It's not just one-way traffic, either. Made-in-China brands like BYD are already making and selling EVs abroad, and others are eager to follow suit. UPDATE: Firstly, I am a full time hyper realism portrait artist, check my website http://www.rebekahcodlinart.co.nz/ . So I had this car for about 6 months after the first panel was wrapped and got through wrapping half the car successfully, and then it went to the wreckers since it needed some work done which costed more than the car lol. (I found out someone is actually using it in my town, so will TRY and find it for a quick update video as I bet they still have the vinyl on it) But! As for the vinyl, it has held up really really well! No change in the 6 months since wrapping and the last time I saw the car. I'm not sure if the vinyl would have damaged the paint over time underneath....But I noticed there was a tiny amount of shrinkage which you will see within 1 or 2 days (after this there is no long term changes) so it's important you make slices when it comes to deeper indents so you don't get it lifting away and also do not slack on post heating!. Use as little heat as possible while wrapping, then post heat thoroughly afterward. All in all very happy with the outcome and can definitely recommend. The vinyl I bought! http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/car-parts-accessories/decals-stickers/other/auction-1142406391.htm FIRST SONG: i-sHiNe Boardbagged 3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBKBBVfls50 Hey guys, I wanted to see if it was possible to wrap a car at 1/10th the price of professional car vinyl (normally NZ$1500, US$1000 at least) for just NZ$130 or US$90, and it be successful. I have heard many times from people to stay away from the China stuff, that its very hard to work with, it wrinkles and bubbles and has glue that wrecks your car paint underneath (this part I haven't tested yet but I will soon when I remove the boot vinyl, stay tuned for the next vid). I couldn't find any videos on here that specifically demonstrated what it was like to wrap using super cheap vinyl as opposed to 3m, Alron etc so I did one myself. I wrapped this door with Chinese brand 'carstyle' vinyl i got off a nz trading site on a hot summers day (about 27 degrees celcius, or 80 degrees fahrenheit), but in the shade (as you will see at the start, it's not a good idea to wrap in the direct sun!). It was actually surprisingly easy to get a good result! I had all of about 3 little bubbles in the whole door, which were easily popped and dispersed, and I only used the heat gun twice on two little wrinkles forming which I realize now was due to a little dent I missed before wrapping. It was smooth to apply, didn't wrinkle apart from over the dent (ya I should have filled this beforehand lol), and produced very few bubbles. All in all, if you have a cheap car with faded/cracked paint work you want to freshen up, go for the cheap China vinyl (specifically 'carstyle').....but do so at your own risk of course ;) I will be wrapping the rest of my car in this :) will upload another video of what it's like to take this stuff off after a month of having it on.
