Because vicious political infighting between the Tory and Whig politic parties made it difficult to pass new tax laws, Harley turned to a private financier named John Blunt to help find enough money for England to keep up with its expenses for the year. Using Harley's government resources, Blunt instigated a series of get-rich schemes that drove artificial demand for unsustainable land and lottery investments with tremendous short term gains. Before the year was done, Blunt had successfully covered the shortfall for the government that year - albeit at the cost of driving England's already outrageous debt even higher. ___________ Get the intro music here! http://bit.ly/1EQA5N7 *Music by Demetori: http://bit.ly/1AaJG4H Listen to the outro music here! http://bit.ly/1ERCS9G __________ Extra History - Warring States Japan: Sengoku Jidai Chapter 1: Battle of Okehazama: http://bit.ly/1xgZxfi James Recommends - City Building Games Across the Ages Anno Series (Dawn of Discovery): http://bit.ly/18mJxPg

SHELL OIL COMPANY DEEP SEA ENDEAVOR UNDERSEA OIL EXPLORATION & DRILLING 51824

25:52
Rocks beneath the sea may hold the oil and gas necessary to sustain future generations. That is the message of “Deep Sea Endeavour,” a 1960s color film by the Shell Oil Company. The only way to determine if oil exists in commercial quantity is by drilling (mark 02:49), as we look at drilling platforms at sea. The narrator explains that the platforms are fastened to the seafloor and we visit one structure positioned off the coast of Spain at mark 03:43. At mark 04:30 we see another offshore structure in the North Sea off the Shetland Islands, this one designed to float on the water’s surface and towed from one location to the next. The follows crews at work before moving to another platform off the coast of Japan (mark 06:11) and additional drilling scenes. In some parts of the ocean, oil may lie more than 6,000 deep, and starting at mark 11:07 it is shown how crews test various pieces of equipment before taking them out to sea. Other times, ships are the only means of establishing a drilling platform, a point that is discussed beginning at mark 15:00 and we watch as a drilling ship heads to sea, equipped with everything from breakfast eggs to heavy machinery. The film continues with more footage of life on the ship and the jobs crews must undertake as they search for oil under the waves. “One day we may be able to replace (oil) with energy from the atom or from the sun itself,” says the narrator at mark 24:40, “but that day is not yet.” We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? Tell people what it is and what they can see by writing something for example: "01:00:12:00 -- President Roosevelt is seen meeting with Winston Churchill at the Quebec Conference." The Most Intelligent Animal on Earth? | Unedited Movie - Aliens of the Deep Sea | Nature Documentary

43:34
How has the octopus become so intelligent and capable of thinking in the abstract? Watch fascinating and often hilarious experiments to see just how smart they are. After this video, you'll never think about the octopus the same. In Aliens of the Deep Sea we get to see how octopuses behave in the wild too. Off the coast of Vancouver Island, underwater divers are watched by a huge octopus - a ghost like creature that lurks until it feels it's safe to emerge and be seen. It's an eerie encounter. This incredible documentary illustrates why the octopus is one of the ocean's most complex and enigmatic creatures which should be studied, not served in restaurants. The octopus uses cognitive reasoning to make deductions and understand its environment. It can shape shift, change color and texture on the fly to blend in with its surroundings to become either predator or defend itself from becoming prey. In one novel experiment we see an octopus wrap its tentacles around a screw-top jar that has a crab inside it. In slow but determined fashion, the octopus successfully opens the jar to get to its prey. The jar is unlike anything it would encounter in the wild - the octopus has used cognitive reasoning, not instinct, to catch its well-deserved lunch. The octopus has lived side-by-side with humankind from our earliest days. But it's only now that we're beginning to unravel the animal's secrets, and the extent of its formidable brain-power. Watch as an octopus slips out of its tank and slithers surreptitiously across a concrete floor. Is it making a break for freedom? Not at all. It knows that its prey is just a short distance away in another tank. As we learn, the octopus can move on land as well as underwater and the little round trip it has taken is not just to get from point A to point B. It's also taking this little detour because it's curious about the world it is living in. It's hard to believe that this animal is simply a mollusk. As far as his family tree goes, the octopus is more closely related to an oyster or a snail than to any other species of animal. And yet, as octopuses behave like shape shifters, moving in and out of tiny openings to get their reward, they are working out solutions the way humans do. They are able to think in the abstract. In Aliens of the Deep Sea we get to see how octopuses behave in the wild too. Amazingly, with all its powerful traits, the octopus has never become king of the sea. Researchers think that it's because of the female's short life span. They give up everything, including their life, for their eggs. But this sad reality may also be the reason that octopuses have an innate intelligence they have no choice but to learn by trial and error. Just how has an animal that is so different from humans become so intelligent? From Spain to Vancouver Island and finally to Capri, Italy, follow scientists as they try to understand how the octopus has evolved to have such intelligence, even by our standards. Through fascinating experiments audiences will discover there is still much to know about this mystifying creature. #Octopus #IntelligentOctopus #OctopusIntelligence #AmazingOctopus #AliensOfTheDeepSea

The deep ocean is the final frontier on planet Earth

14:49
Watch the latest in the Ocean series - This is the most over-fished sea in the world: https://youtu.be/oaW2rqJjXvs The ocean covers 70% of our planet. The deep-sea floor is a realm that is largely unexplored, but cutting-edge technology is enabling a new generation of aquanauts to go deeper than ever before. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.trib.al/rWl91R7 Beneath the waves is a mysterious world that takes up to 95% of Earth's living space. Only three people have ever reached the bottom of the deepest part of the ocean. The deep is a world without sunlight, of freezing temperatures, and immense pressure. It's remained largely unexplored until now. Cutting-edge technology is enabling a new generation of aquanauts to explore deeper than ever before. They are opening up a whole new world of potential benefits to humanity. The risks are great, but the rewards could be greater. From a vast wealth of resources to clues about the origins of life, the race is on to the final frontier The Okeanos Explorer, the American government state-of-the-art vessel, designed for every type of deep ocean exploration from discovering new species to investigating shipwrecks. On board, engineers and scientists come together to answer questions about the origins of life and human history. Today the Okeanos is on a mission to investigate the wreck of a World War one submarine. Engineer Bobby Moore is part of a team who has developed the technology for this type of mission. The “deep discover”, a remote operating vehicle is equipped with 20 powerful LED lights and designed to withstand the huge pressure four miles down. Equivalent to 50 jumbo jets stacked on top of a person While the crew of the Okeanos send robots to investigate the deep, some of their fellow scientists prefer a more hands-on approach. Doctor Greg stone is a world leading marine biologist with over 8,000 hours under the sea. He has been exploring the abyss in person for 30 years. The technology opening up the deep is also opening up opportunity. Not just to witness the diversity of life but to glimpse vast amounts of rare mineral resources. Some of the world's most valuable metals can be found deep under the waves. A discovery that has begun to pique the interest of the global mining industry. The boldest of mining companies are heading to the deep drawn by the allure of a new Gold Rush. But to exploit it they're also beating a path to another strange new world. In an industrial estate in the north of England, SMD is one of the world's leading manufacturers of remote underwater equipment. The industrial technology the company has developed has made mining possible several kilometers beneath the ocean surface. With an estimated 150 trillion dollars’ worth of gold alone, deep-sea mining has the potential to transform the global economy. With so much still to discover, mining in the deep ocean could have unknowable impact. It's not just life today that may need protecting; reaching the deep ocean might just allow researchers to answer some truly fundamental questions. Hydrothermal vents, hot springs on the ocean floor, are cracks in the Earth's crust. Some claim they could help scientists glimpse the origins of life itself. We might still be years away from unlocking the mysteries of the deep. Even with the latest technology, this kind of exploration is always challenging. As the crew of the Okeanos comes to terms with a scale of the challenge and the opportunity that lies beneath, what they and others discover could transform humanity's understanding of how to protect the ocean. It's the most hostile environment on earth, but the keys to our future may lie in the deep. TechKnow - Deep sea gold rush

23:43
Oceans cover 70 percent of the earth's surface, but only a fraction of the undersea world has been explored. On this episode of TechKnow, Phil Torres joins a team of scientists on a special expedition to explore and uncover the mysteries at the bottom of the ocean floor. "What we are doing is similar to astronauts and planetary scientists just trying to study life on another planet," says Beth Orcutt, a senior research scientist. The journey begins in Costa Rica aboard the R/V Atlantis, a research vessel operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. From there, Phil gets the chance to take a dive with Alvin, a deep-water submersible capable of taking explorers down to 6,000 metres (20,000 feet) under the sea. Commissioned in 1964, Alvin has a celebrated history, locating an unexploded hydrogen bomb off the coast of Spain and exploring the famous RMS Titanic in the 1980s. Alvin and its first female pilot, Cindy Van Dover, were the first to discover hydrothermal vents, which are underwater springs where plumes of black smoke and water pour out from underneath the earth's crust. The vents were inhabited by previously unknown organisms that thrived in the absence of sunlight. After 40 years of exploration, Alvin got a high-tech upgrade. The storied submersible is now outfitted with high-resolution cameras to provide a 245-degree viewing field and a robotic arm that scientists can use to pull samples of rock and ocean life to then study back on land. But scientists are not the only ones interested in the ocean. These days the new gold rush is not in the hills, it is in the deep sea. For thousands of years miners have been exploiting the earth in search of precious metals. As resources on dry land are depleted, now the search for new sources of metals and minerals is heading underwater. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's national ocean service estimates that there is more than $150tn in gold waiting to be mined from the floor of the world's oceans. "The industry is moving very, very fast. They have far more financial resources than the scientific community," says Cindy Van Dover, Alvin's first female pilot and Duke University Oceanography Professor. Seabed mining is still in the planning stages, but Nautilus Minerals, a Canadian mining company, says it has the technology and the contracts in place with the island nation of Papua New Guinea to start mining in its waters in about two years. What is the future of seabed mining? And what are the consequences of seabed mining for the marine ecosystems? Deep Sea Fish Farming in Geodesic Domes: Upgrade

10:03
In this episode of Upgrade, Motherboard goes to Baja California, Mexico to get a firsthand look at these free floating pods, and to get an understanding for why we need better ways to cultivate our future food sources. Whether it’s found on a plate of sushi, grilled in our backyard, or thrown on pasta, seafood is a staple for many diets around the world, and demand is growing. And as the commercial seafood industry booms, fish stocks worldwide face perilous declines. We’ve surpassed our capacity to sustainably fish wild caught fish, shrimp, and mollusks from the ocean, and so we’ve turned to aquaculture, or fish farming, as a strategy to meet demand for our growing appetites for water-borne critters. The aquaculture industry is growing fast. According to the FAO, per capita production of seafood from aquaculture has increased 6.9 percent annually since 1970. Unfortunately for us and for our Earth, current methods of fish farming often involve crowded, tethered pens, which can have poor water circulation and contribute to the spread of disease, and put large amounts of environmental stress on the surrounding waterways. This is where Steve Page of Ocean Farm Technologies comes in. Taking inspiration from naturally-occurring schools of fish and Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic domes, Page co-designed the Aquapod, a free floating, untethered deep ocean fish habitat which reduces overcrowding, and creates less stress on surrounding environments due to its unique ability to change location with the ocean's current. How a Canadian company will mine the sea bed near Papua New Guinea

01:11
Canadian mining company Nautilus Minerals has reached an agreement with the government of Papua New Guinea to begin mining an area of seabed believed to be rich in gold and copper ores, according to the BBC. Under the terms of the agreement, Papua New Guinea will contribute $120 million to the operation and receive a 15 percent share in the mine. Environmentalists say the mine will devastate the area and cause long-lasting damage to the environment. The BBC reports that "the mine will target an area of hydrothermal vents where superheated, highly acidic water emerges from the seabed, where it encounters far colder and more alkaline seawater, forcing it to deposit high concentrations of minerals." The report continues: The result is that the seabed is formed of ores that are far richer in gold and copper than ores found on land. Mike Johnston, chief executive of Nautilus Minerals told the BBC "that a temperature probe left in place for 18 months was found to have 'high grade copper all over it'." Nautilus announced in April that it had completed its bulk cutter, the first component of its Seafloor Production Tools system, which will be used to mine the seabed. Nautilus also approximately 500,000 square kilometres of "highly prospective exploration acreage" in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Fiji, Vanuatu and Tonga, as well as in international waters in the eastern Pacific, the company said in a press release. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Animation Studio’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D news animations that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health. New Deep-Sea Robot Will Help Us Explore Oceans Throughout the Solar System

Named for the Ancient Greek god of the Underworld, the Hadal Zone is the pitch-black part of our oceans below 6,000 meters. Now, imagine a fleet of robots able to roam freely in the parts of the ocean that have been almost impossible for humans to reach, and bring back what they see: such as lifeforms that can survive with zero sunlight, very little nutrition, under pressure that could crush a car. OceanX's research vessel #Alucia took engineers from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to test a brand-new prototype that will one day explore these remote, unforgiving parts of our planet, and eventually, oceans throughout our solar system. The Largest Oil Rig in The World

19:43
Perdido is the deepest floating oil rig (platform) in the world at a water depth of about 2450 meters operated by the Shell Oil Company in the Gulf of Mexico. The Perdido is located in the Perdido fold belt which is a rich discovery of crude oil and natural gas that lies in water that is nearly 8000 feet deep. The platform's peak production will be 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. At 267 meters, the Perdido is nearly as tall as the Eiffel Tower. An oil rig is a large structure with facilities to drill wells, to extract and process oil and natural gas, and to temporarily store product until it can be brought to shore for refining and marketing. In many cases, the platform contains facilities to house the workforce as well. The Mystery Beneath (Baltic Sea UFO Documentary) | Timeline

58:12
Check out our new website for more incredible history documentaries: HD and ad-free. http://bit.ly/2O6zUsK The most exciting underwater story of the modern age On June 19th 2011 the Swedish-based diving company Ocean Explorer discovered something extraordinary. They were exploring in the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Finland, looking for sunken treasures when a very unusual image suddenly appeared on the sonar. A 197ft diameter cylindrical object was discovered at the depth of approximately 275 feet, something they had never seen before. In this documentary special, we follow the treasure hunters and their crew on their expedition to reveal what could be the most extraordinary discovery in deep sea ever. We share the tension, the excitement and the nervousness that threats – both known and unknown – may be enforced. There is reason to believe that their ship is under surveillance. Using advanced equipment - ROW cameras, sonar pictures and human divers, we discover that the findings really are something very strange and incredibly unique. Chinese companies to help Malaysia build new deep sea port off Malacca

02:21
The Malaysian coastal city of Malacca has been described as the window through which China and its people have learned about Malaysia. Though Malacca is no economic powerhouse and currently has no deep sea port, an ambitious joint venture between China and Malaysia is aiming to return glory days to the southern city. CCTV’s Rian Maelzer has the story. 16 Lost Underwater Treasure You Didn't Know Existed

12:55
Many ships filled lost treasure, gold and jewelry were lost at sea. Some of this lost underwater treasure is still there today, so get your diving equipment and start the hunt. SUBSCRIBE for the latest videos: https://goo.gl/7xzjzR At number 16, we start with a shipwreck that didn’t even require scuba gear to reach. In 1533, The Portuguese ship Bom Jesus vanished off the Namibian coast without a trace. In 2008 the remains of the ship were found, buried in the sand, shipwrecked by a violent storm. Nicknamed “The Diamond Shipwreck” because, well, there’s a diamond mine close by, it is the oldest shipwreck ever discovered on the coast of Africa. Inside the Bom Jesus, 22 tons of copper were found, along with cannons, swords, elephant tusks and thousands of gold coins traced to King Joao [pronounced who-AH-oh] the 3rd. At 15, it’s the Hanneke Wrome. Discovered in south Finland near the island of Jussaro by archaeologists diving underwater, the ship had sunk in 1468 with all of its passengers and cargo. Almost 100 feet long, it is still well preserved and the woodwork still shows the craftsmanship of the Hanseatic builders. Along with other trading goods of the time, The Hanneke was also carrying 10,000 gold coins, which are now worth around $60 million. Next, we continue with The Belitung. Discovered off the coast of Indonesia in 1998, it was an arabian ship; the first to be discovered there actually. As a trading ship, it was filled with spice jars, funeral urns, silver boxes, bowls and crystals. It was carrying treasures such as jewels, rubies and sapphires, silver and gold cups, and flasks. Soon after its discovery, the wreck was purchased by the Singaporean Government and is now a tourist attraction. A really long time ago, between 1200 and 900 B.C., while the Babylon Empire was still a thing, a ship sank off the coast of Devon, England. It was discovered in 2010 by amateur archaeologists, along with over 300 artifacts like weapons, jewelry and copper and tin ingots. It’s not exactly filled with riches like the other ships on our list, but it’s a very important discovery nonetheless. It offers a glimpse into a very distant period in our history and proves that big trade networks existed during the Bronze Age between Europe and Britain. A hurricane brought down the S.S. Central American in 1857, at number 12 on our list, along with its cargo of 15 tons of gold. The shipwreck and the lost gold led to the “Panic of 1857”, the first worldwide economic crisis, that started in the US impacted by the loss of the ship. It was discovered in 1987 and 39 insurance companies made claims to the gold and other artifacts within. When the ship sank, the same insurance companies were forced to pay damages and were now trying to get their money back. After long battles in court, the team that discovered the gold was awarded 92 percent of the treasure. Different pieces of it went up for auction, with one record-breaking sale of one gold bar for $8 million. Next, we continue with a shipwreck of the coast of Greece. Discovered in the year 1900, it was the world's first major underwater archaeological expedition, with scientists from all over the world following it closely. The recovery process took over 70 years, with the last expedition being in 1976. The shipwreck contained the famous Antikythera mechanism, believed to be the world's oldest analog computer. Because of this famous artifact, many people tend to ignore the rest of the treasure, which includes coins and jewelry, glassware, pottery, statues and even couches and beds. The entire collection of artifacts is on display at the National Archaeological Museum in Greece. At number 10 we have The S.S. Republic. Discovered off the coast of Georgia, by Odyssey, a deep sea salvage and exploration company, the ship had been submerged for more than 200 years. Believed to have sunk during a hurricane in 1865, it went down with over 50,000 US silver and gold coins and nearly 14,000 other artifacts, that include thousands of glasses, bottles, and stoneware containers. Shortly after its discovery a lawsuit was filed laying claim to the wreck. A federal judge ruled in favor of Odyssey, and in 2004 the company was legally awarded ownership of the found wreckage. The San Jose was a Spanish galleon destroyed by the British around 300 years ago. Everyone onboard was killed and the ship sank near the coast of Colombia. The ship's cargo includes gems, jewelry, gold and silver, all estimated to be worth $1 billion. Under over 1000 feet of water, deep in the ports of Cartagena, its exact location is not disclosed by the Colombian government, to keep it safe from looters and treasure hunters. A couple of divers were exploring the harbor of Caesarea National Park in Israel when they found a gold coin. It was the first of many, as they would later discover, when the Israel Antiquities Authority returned with a whole team and recovered more than 2000 gold coins

Giant Tuna and Swordfish - Saltwater Fishing Louisiana

11:43
In this episode, we are going deep sea fishing in the Gulf of Mexico for giant saltwater fish like Yellowfin Tuna and Swordfish. Launching out of Venice Louisiana with Mexican Gulf Fishing Company, my boss and and a few of our friends came together for an epic summer fishing trip. Before the first hour, we experienced a flood of Tuna! I had never caught a tuna and none of us had ever caught a swordfish. We used the Shimano Beaster 9000 electric fishing reel to reel in the huge swordfish in deep water. I also fulfilled a bucket list item of catching a tuna and eating the meat right at the dock. LOCKHEED PETROLEUM SERVICES DEEP SEA OIL DRILLING CAPABILITIES 44204

23:13
Lockheed Petroleum Services Ltd. gave viewers a look at the oil and gas wells that operate deep below the water’s surface off the coast of Louisiana in the early 1970s, and the revolutionary technology that made it possible to operate these wells. At mark 02:15, the film introduces the viewer to A.W. Marks, operations superintendent at Lockheed Petroleum Services, who shows the viewer the capsule used to transport workers into the ocean depths. The capsule is lowered into the water at mark 02:40 as the film’s title, “The Subsea Connection,” is introduced. Workers are shown working in the underwater wells, and at mark 04:43 the film tells the viewer how off the west coast of Canada in 1970, Lockheed Petroleum perfected such underwater work in depths of up to 900 feet, and we see footage from those trial runs, including an illustration at mark 06:06 of the hardware sections needed — including wellhead cellar, the service capsule, and the topside support equipment. The narrator continues giving detail of how the subsea connection is made after an oil well is drilled. By mark 07:49, we see a lengthy segment of footage as crews from Lockheed Petroleum and the Shell Oil Company install hardware for a service capsule on a producing subsea well in the Gulf of Mexico in 375 feet of water, followed by scenes of men working in and testing their underwater environment, as a control room on the surface monitors operations and environmental measures. Following a 30-minute ride from beneath the waves, the capsule breaks the waves at mark 17:25, just long enough to take on additional equipment, supplies and a fresh crew before taking another dive. “The idea of men working comfortably beneath the sea to accomplish subsea connections is a reality,” says the narrator at mark 22:22, as the film reaches the end. Background on this: The subsea oil and gas production system developed by Lockheed Petroleum Services Ltd. (LPS) consists of three basic parts—the wellhead cellar, the manifold center, and the service capsule. The system is completely diverless and all components are maintained at one atmosphere of pressure. It is fully automated for remote operation, is capable of through-flow-line (TFL) tool operation, and can be designed for any water depth. The first system was installed in the Gulf of Mexico in Main Pass Block 290 for Shell Oil Company in the summer of 1972. A reentry was made 1 year later for minor repairs and complete inspection. By January 1,1975, the system, operating on a dually completed well, had produced more than V2 million barrels of oil. Four additional wellhead cellars and a production manifold were due for installation in the summer of 1975, The LPS one-atmosphere system has been expanded to provide a means for installing platform riser pipeline tie-ins resulting in a completely welded installation without use of divers or decompression techniques. We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting?
