How a Canadian company will mine the sea bed near Papua New Guinea

01:11
Canadian mining company Nautilus Minerals has reached an agreement with the government of Papua New Guinea to begin mining an area of seabed believed to be rich in gold and copper ores, according to the BBC. Under the terms of the agreement, Papua New Guinea will contribute $120 million to the operation and receive a 15 percent share in the mine. Environmentalists say the mine will devastate the area and cause long-lasting damage to the environment. The BBC reports that "the mine will target an area of hydrothermal vents where superheated, highly acidic water emerges from the seabed, where it encounters far colder and more alkaline seawater, forcing it to deposit high concentrations of minerals." The report continues: The result is that the seabed is formed of ores that are far richer in gold and copper than ores found on land. Mike Johnston, chief executive of Nautilus Minerals told the BBC "that a temperature probe left in place for 18 months was found to have 'high grade copper all over it'." Nautilus announced in April that it had completed its bulk cutter, the first component of its Seafloor Production Tools system, which will be used to mine the seabed. Nautilus also approximately 500,000 square kilometres of "highly prospective exploration acreage" in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Fiji, Vanuatu and Tonga, as well as in international waters in the eastern Pacific, the company said in a press release. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Animation Studio’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D news animations that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health. SHELL OIL COMPANY DEEP SEA ENDEAVOR UNDERSEA OIL EXPLORATION & DRILLING 51824

25:52
Rocks beneath the sea may hold the oil and gas necessary to sustain future generations. That is the message of “Deep Sea Endeavour,” a 1960s color film by the Shell Oil Company. The only way to determine if oil exists in commercial quantity is by drilling (mark 02:49), as we look at drilling platforms at sea. The narrator explains that the platforms are fastened to the seafloor and we visit one structure positioned off the coast of Spain at mark 03:43. At mark 04:30 we see another offshore structure in the North Sea off the Shetland Islands, this one designed to float on the water’s surface and towed from one location to the next. The follows crews at work before moving to another platform off the coast of Japan (mark 06:11) and additional drilling scenes. In some parts of the ocean, oil may lie more than 6,000 deep, and starting at mark 11:07 it is shown how crews test various pieces of equipment before taking them out to sea. Other times, ships are the only means of establishing a drilling platform, a point that is discussed beginning at mark 15:00 and we watch as a drilling ship heads to sea, equipped with everything from breakfast eggs to heavy machinery. The film continues with more footage of life on the ship and the jobs crews must undertake as they search for oil under the waves. “One day we may be able to replace (oil) with energy from the atom or from the sun itself,” says the narrator at mark 24:40, “but that day is not yet.” We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? Tell people what it is and what they can see by writing something for example: "01:00:12:00 -- President Roosevelt is seen meeting with Winston Churchill at the Quebec Conference." TechKnow - Deep sea gold rush

23:43
Oceans cover 70 percent of the earth's surface, but only a fraction of the undersea world has been explored. On this episode of TechKnow, Phil Torres joins a team of scientists on a special expedition to explore and uncover the mysteries at the bottom of the ocean floor. "What we are doing is similar to astronauts and planetary scientists just trying to study life on another planet," says Beth Orcutt, a senior research scientist. The journey begins in Costa Rica aboard the R/V Atlantis, a research vessel operated by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. From there, Phil gets the chance to take a dive with Alvin, a deep-water submersible capable of taking explorers down to 6,000 metres (20,000 feet) under the sea. Commissioned in 1964, Alvin has a celebrated history, locating an unexploded hydrogen bomb off the coast of Spain and exploring the famous RMS Titanic in the 1980s. Alvin and its first female pilot, Cindy Van Dover, were the first to discover hydrothermal vents, which are underwater springs where plumes of black smoke and water pour out from underneath the earth's crust. The vents were inhabited by previously unknown organisms that thrived in the absence of sunlight. After 40 years of exploration, Alvin got a high-tech upgrade. The storied submersible is now outfitted with high-resolution cameras to provide a 245-degree viewing field and a robotic arm that scientists can use to pull samples of rock and ocean life to then study back on land. But scientists are not the only ones interested in the ocean. These days the new gold rush is not in the hills, it is in the deep sea. For thousands of years miners have been exploiting the earth in search of precious metals. As resources on dry land are depleted, now the search for new sources of metals and minerals is heading underwater. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's national ocean service estimates that there is more than $150tn in gold waiting to be mined from the floor of the world's oceans. "The industry is moving very, very fast. They have far more financial resources than the scientific community," says Cindy Van Dover, Alvin's first female pilot and Duke University Oceanography Professor. Seabed mining is still in the planning stages, but Nautilus Minerals, a Canadian mining company, says it has the technology and the contracts in place with the island nation of Papua New Guinea to start mining in its waters in about two years. What is the future of seabed mining? And what are the consequences of seabed mining for the marine ecosystems? Can science and industry co-exist and work together on viable and sustainable solutions? - Subscribe to our channel: http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera - Check out our website: http://www.aljazeera.com/

The deep ocean is the final frontier on planet Earth

14:49
The ocean covers 70% of our planet. The deep-sea floor is a realm that is largely unexplored, but cutting-edge technology is enabling a new generation of aquanauts to go deeper than ever before. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.trib.al/rWl91R7 Beneath the waves is a mysterious world that takes up to 95% of Earth's living space. Only three people have ever reached the bottom of the deepest part of the ocean. The deep is a world without sunlight, of freezing temperatures, and immense pressure. It's remained largely unexplored until now. Cutting-edge technology is enabling a new generation of aquanauts to explore deeper than ever before. They are opening up a whole new world of potential benefits to humanity. The risks are great, but the rewards could be greater. From a vast wealth of resources to clues about the origins of life, the race is on to the final frontier The Okeanos Explorer, the American government state-of-the-art vessel, designed for every type of deep ocean exploration from discovering new species to investigating shipwrecks. On board, engineers and scientists come together to answer questions about the origins of life and human history. Today the Okeanos is on a mission to investigate the wreck of a World War one submarine. Engineer Bobby Moore is part of a team who has developed the technology for this type of mission. The “deep discover”, a remote operating vehicle is equipped with 20 powerful LED lights and designed to withstand the huge pressure four miles down. Equivalent to 50 jumbo jets stacked on top of a person While the crew of the Okeanos send robots to investigate the deep, some of their fellow scientists prefer a more hands-on approach. Doctor Greg stone is a world leading marine biologist with over 8,000 hours under the sea. He has been exploring the abyss in person for 30 years. The technology opening up the deep is also opening up opportunity. Not just to witness the diversity of life but to glimpse vast amounts of rare mineral resources. Some of the world's most valuable metals can be found deep under the waves. A discovery that has begun to pique the interest of the global mining industry. The boldest of mining companies are heading to the deep drawn by the allure of a new Gold Rush. But to exploit it they're also beating a path to another strange new world. In an industrial estate in the north of England, SMD is one of the world's leading manufacturers of remote underwater equipment. The industrial technology the company has developed has made mining possible several kilometers beneath the ocean surface. With an estimated 150 trillion dollars’ worth of gold alone, deep-sea mining has the potential to transform the global economy. With so much still to discover, mining in the deep ocean could have unknowable impact. It's not just life today that may need protecting; reaching the deep ocean might just allow researchers to answer some truly fundamental questions. Hydrothermal vents, hot springs on the ocean floor, are cracks in the Earth's crust. Some claim they could help scientists glimpse the origins of life itself. We might still be years away from unlocking the mysteries of the deep. Even with the latest technology, this kind of exploration is always challenging. As the crew of the Okeanos comes to terms with a scale of the challenge and the opportunity that lies beneath, what they and others discover could transform humanity's understanding of how to protect the ocean. It's the most hostile environment on earth, but the keys to our future may lie in the deep. Its pioneers are scientists leveraging the latest technology to cast light on the massive and incomprehensibly dark environment that extends more than 35,000 feet down. Until recently, this world was known only to our planet’s most unearthly species. This is the story of our largest biome—and the people devoting themselves to understanding it and saving it for future generations. 40 years ago we discovered hydrothermal vents, which act as Earth's plumbing system, transporting chemicals and extreme heat from the molten core of our planet, helping to regulate the chemical makeup of the oceans. But this seemingly toxic environment is still home to life. Organisms that don’t need photosynthesis to survive can live down here. And with most of the seafloor left to explore, many species remain undiscovered. Studying these unlikely ecosystems can teach us about the earliest stages of life’s evolution here on Earth, and about the possibility of life on other planets. That’s why NASA is working with oceanographers to help plan the mission to explore Jupiter's ice-covered moon, Europa. And because these vents form in active volcanic zones, they also help us better understand how landforms and moves over time. Plus, the sludge that’s constantly spewing from the vents contains some of the most valuable metals known to man. [Guardian video journalist] “In the deep ocean, where the water is as dark as ink, lie riches that no treasure hunters have managed to retrieve. They are deposits of precious minerals, from cobalt to gold, that have tantalized miners and nations for decades...” In 2019, a Canadian company will make the first-ever attempt at extracting these minerals. Using the latest technologies and massive, custom designed vehicles, it aims to bring up $1.5 billion worth of metals from a single site 25km off the coast of Papua New Guinea. Nautilus says it will minimize environmental damage by using infrared cameras and sonar to pinpoint the exact location of ore deposits, allowing it to shred less of the ocean floor. But environmentalists aren’t buying it. Preserving a sensitive ecosystem 8,000 feet underwater from the impact of mining is just not that simple. Unfortunately, we may not have much choice. There’s growing demand for these metals, but dwindling supplies of them on land. Cobalt — for instance — is used in jet engines, lithium-ion batteries, and the computer or smartphone you’re watching this video on—and the machines we made it on. But this age-old clash between miners and environment is really just one chapter in a much larger story of technology development—innovations aimed at maintaining the delicate balance of the increasingly threatened ocean ecosystem. One such tool is the EK80 broadband acoustic echo sounder. It uses a range of frequencies to paint a much more comprehensive picture of the amount and types of species living in a selected area of water.

How Undersea Internet Fiber Optic Cables Are Laid On The Ocean Floor

03:12
Laying of cables in the oceans of our world is a fascinating business. Men and women toil long and tedious hours to make this possible. Submarine cables are laid down by using specially-modified ships that carry the submarine cable on board and slowly lay it out on the seabed as per the plans given by the cable operator. The ships can carry with them up to 2,000km-length of cable. Depending on the equipment on-board the cable-ship, the type of plow used, the sea conditions and the ocean-bed where the cable is being laid down, cable ships can do anywhere from 100-150km of cable laying per day. Newer ships and plows now do about 200km of cable laying per day. The cables are specially constructed for submarine operations as they have to endure harsh conditions as well as pressure. Fiber optic cables carry DWDM [Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing] laser signals at a rate of terabytes per second. They use optical repeaters to strengthen the signal which attenuates over long distances. They have a decade lifespan and costs vary (depending on the length of the cable). The typical cost for a project is anywhere from $100m-$500m. We don't use satellites because they can't carry terabytes of data for less than a billion dollars per communication line. The coiling of hundreds of miles of cable in the cargo hold is a process that can take between three to four weeks to complete. Submarine cable laying process starts from the landing station, where a long cable section is attached (connected) to the landing point and then extended out to a few miles in the sea. This end is connected to the cable on the ship and then the ship starts its cable laying process. The process also involves a plow. The cable is not simply left to sit on the ocean bed, but is actually being fed into a plow, that lays the cable into a trench. Depending on where the cable is laid out, the cable coming in from the ocean to the landing station might be advertised or not. Most of the time cable consortium companies try to hide the cable as much as they can, so that only those who need to know – municipalities, port authorities and shipping companies – are informed of the exact route of the cable. When cables are damaged, either divers or specialized small submersibles with cameras and lights are sent down to the seabed to investigate where the cuts are. Then, either the divers or robotic arms on the submersible bring the two ends of the cable to the surface, where they are re-spliced and joined again. Advanced Skin-Nourishing Beauty From the Dead Sea | Deep Sea Cosmetics

03:55
Find the Deep Sea Cosmetics website and all our skincare products at: https://www.deepseacosmetics.com/ Since ancient times, the unique therapeutic and beautifying powers of Dead Sea minerals have been recognized for their beneficial effects on skin. Today, advances in science and technology have confirmed these ancient discoveries. Deep Sea Cosmetics has extracted these powerful elements from the depths of the Earth's most pure and genuine springs of youth to create a natural formula that blends Dead Sea minerals, peptides, antioxidants, vitamins, and herbal extracts proven to enhance your health and beauty. In youthful skin, collagen fibers are bound tightly together by elastin forming a water-saturated net, giving the skin elasticity and turgidity. As skin ages, collagen production slows. Environmental and other stressors add to the damage, making the elastin net thin until it gradually loses the ability to retain water, resulting in dry, sagging skin. The key to youthful and vibrant skin is preserving skin hydration, collagen structure and elasticity. Through a unique process, Deep Sea Cosmetics has combined original Dead Sea extracts with a peptide complex of synthesized proteins found in the most common types of collagen. When the Peptide Complex is added to cultured human fibroblasts, it stimulates them to produce the main components of youthful skin: collagen, elastin and a key glycan, hyaluronic acid, which can hold up to a thousand times its weight in water. Deep Sea Cosmetics has advanced the technology of preserving and naturally enhancing skin hydration through a biological approach to skin care that stands the test of time. The Dead Sea reflects something of the nature of this lake. Known in the Bible as the 'Salt Sea,' this inland body of water with its high mineral content allows nothing to live in its waters. Deep Sea Cosmetics confidently and proudly stands behind each and every product that we sell, and we pledge that we will always uphold the highest standards of safety for our customers around the world. The Dead Sea is located in the Syro-African Rift, a 4,000-mile fault line in the Earth's crust. The lowest point of dry land on earth is the shoreline of the Dead Sea at 1,300 feet below sea level. That the lake is at the lowest point means that water does not drain from this lake. Daily 7 million tons of water evaporate but the minerals remain, causing the salt content to increase. Figures for the Dead Sea's salinity today range from 26-35%. Nearly 10 times as salty as the world's oceans and twice as saline as the Great Salt Lake in Utah, the Dead Sea is rich with minerals. The Dead Sea Works company on the southwest side of the lake employs 1,600 people around the clock to harvest the valuable minerals from the water. Potash is the most valuable of those extracted today and is used in the manufacture of fertilizer. The unique concentration of the Dead Sea waters has long been known to have medicinal value. Aristotle, Queen of Sheba, King Solomon, and Cleopatra were all familiar with this and modern doctors as well often prescribe patients with skin ailments to soak in the waters of the Dead Sea. Because of the dropping level of the Dead Sea, the southern end is no longer under water, except for that which is channeled by aqueducts for the purpose of extracting minerals. The Dead Sea, unlike the Sea of Galilee to the north, does not figure prominently in the biblical narratives. Its most important role was as a barrier, blocking traffic to Judah from the east. An advancing army of Ammonites and Moabites apparently crossed a shallow part of the Dead Sea on their way to attack King Jehoshaphat (2 Chron 20). Ezekiel has prophesied that one day the Dead Sea will be fresh water and fishermen will spread their nets along the shore. Ailments that Benefit from Dead Sea Minerals: * Skin ailments * Psoriasis * Arthritic Disorders * Acne * A topic Dermatitis / Eczema * Cellulite * Hair Loss * Aging and skin problems * General Stress * Dry skin * Dandruff * Wrinkling * Insomnia * Skin Allergies It is also highly beneficial for relieving muscle tension or for simply relaxing and enjoying a rejuvenating experience. There's nothing like a soak in a Dead Sea Salt bath. This practice was once related to high-end spas and expensive skin clinic, but now therapeutic salt baths are becoming common practice in homes all across America. Because vicious political infighting between the Tory and Whig politic parties made it difficult to pass new tax laws, Harley turned to a private financier named John Blunt to help find enough money for England to keep up with its expenses for the year. Using Harley's government resources, Blunt instigated a series of get-rich schemes that drove artificial demand for unsustainable land and lottery investments with tremendous short term gains. Before the year was done, Blunt had successfully covered the shortfall for the government that year - albeit at the cost of driving England's already outrageous debt even higher. ___________ Get the intro music here! http://bit.ly/1EQA5N7 *Music by Demetori: http://bit.ly/1AaJG4H Listen to the outro music here! http://bit.ly/1ERCS9G __________ Extra History - Warring States Japan: Sengoku Jidai Chapter 1: Battle of Okehazama: http://bit.ly/1xgZxfi James Recommends - City Building Games Across the Ages Anno Series (Dawn of Discovery): http://bit.ly/18mJxPg

Deep Sea Fish Farming in Geodesic Domes: Upgrade

10:03
In this episode of Upgrade, Motherboard goes to Baja California, Mexico to get a firsthand look at these free floating pods, and to get an understanding for why we need better ways to cultivate our future food sources. Whether it’s found on a plate of sushi, grilled in our backyard, or thrown on pasta, seafood is a staple for many diets around the world, and demand is growing. And as the commercial seafood industry booms, fish stocks worldwide face perilous declines. We’ve surpassed our capacity to sustainably fish wild caught fish, shrimp, and mollusks from the ocean, and so we’ve turned to aquaculture, or fish farming, as a strategy to meet demand for our growing appetites for water-borne critters. The aquaculture industry is growing fast. According to the FAO, per capita production of seafood from aquaculture has increased 6.9 percent annually since 1970. Unfortunately for us and for our Earth, current methods of fish farming often involve crowded, tethered pens, which can have poor water circulation and contribute to the spread of disease, and put large amounts of environmental stress on the surrounding waterways. This is where Steve Page of Ocean Farm Technologies comes in. Taking inspiration from naturally-occurring schools of fish and Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic domes, Page co-designed the Aquapod, a free floating, untethered deep ocean fish habitat which reduces overcrowding, and creates less stress on surrounding environments due to its unique ability to change location with the ocean's current. Divers Encounter Strange Deep-Sea Worm Over 8m Long

02:41
ID: 1559686 These two divers found themselves dwarfed by a deep-sea worm measuring more than eight meters long and made up of hundreds of thousands of organisms. Longtime friends Steve Hathaway, 56, and Andrew Buttle, 48, were diving off the coast of Whakaari, the stratovolcano on White Island, New Zealand, on October 25, when they discovered the gelatinous worm. Initially diving to record footage for the island that Andrew inherited from his grandfather, their focus was stolen by the hollow, wind-sock-like creature. The worm can be seen moving delicately through the water, occasionally shuddering and pulsating whilst the divers swim gently around it so not to disturb it. **Please contact [email protected] for media / licensing / broadcast usage** SUBMIT A VIDEO: https://bit.ly/2HWQ0mD Connect with Caters: Twitter: https://twitter.com/Caters_News Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CatersTV Website: https://www.catersnews.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/caters_news/ Company Information: Caters Clips is owned and operated by Caters News Agency Ltd, an international multimedia content provider. (Only other offerings I can think of with similar handles are custom, or customized, nowhere near this price point). -Nice lockup with no stick -Attractive Price Point Overall I think this a great first effort from Stedemon and look forward to their future runs of this knife as well as future models. They have great potential to create unique, affordable premium knives.

The Malaysian coastal city of Malacca has been described as the window through which China and its people have learned about Malaysia. Though Malacca is no economic powerhouse and currently has no deep sea port, an ambitious joint venture between China and Malaysia is aiming to return glory days to the southern city. Giant Tuna and Swordfish - Saltwater Fishing Louisiana

11:43
In this episode, we are going deep sea fishing in the Gulf of Mexico for giant saltwater fish like Yellowfin Tuna and Swordfish. Launching out of Venice Louisiana with Mexican Gulf Fishing Company, my boss and and a few of our friends came together for an epic summer fishing trip. Before the first hour, we experienced a flood of Tuna! I had never caught a tuna and none of us had ever caught a swordfish. We used the Shimano Beaster 9000 electric fishing reel to reel in the huge swordfish in deep water. I also fulfilled a bucket list item of catching a tuna and eating the meat right at the dock. Deep Sea Ocean Mining - HUGHES GLOMAR EXPLORER Project Azorian 21050

14:30
This historic film shows techniques used to conduct deep ocean mining of the sea floor, which were pioneered in the 1960s. The potential for this type of mining (particularly of manganese nodules) was never fully realized. Ironically, the program did end up providing the cover for the USNS Hughes Glomar Explorer (T-AG-193), a deep-sea drillship platform built for the United States Central Intelligence Agency Special Activities Division secret operation Project Azorian to recover the sunken Soviet submarine K-129, lost in April 1968. Hughes Glomar Explorer (HGE), as the ship was called at the time, was built between 1973 and 1974, by Sun Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. for more than US$350 million at the direction of Howard Hughes for use by his company, Global Marine Development Inc.[4] This is equivalent to $1.67 billion in present-day terms.[5] She set sail on 20 June 1974. Hughes told the media that the ship's purpose was to extract manganese nodules from the ocean floor. This marine geology cover story became surprisingly influential, spurring many others to examine the idea. But in sworn testimony in United States district court proceedings and in appearances before government agencies, Global Marine executives and others associated with Hughes Glomar Explorer project unanimously maintained that the ship could not be used in any economically viable ocean mineral operation. This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD. For more information visit http://www.PeriscopeFilm.com
