i-D Meets: London's Rising Fashion Stars
Enter the weird and wonderful worlds of four CSM grads turned fashion’s brightest young things. Step inside Istanbul-born, London-based rebel Dilara Findikoglu’s cabinet of curiosities, rub a wishing stone with Rottingdean Bazaar’s James Theseus Buck and Luke Brooks, and peer into designer, illustrator and make-up maestro Matty Bovan’s kaleidoscopic diary of everyday outfits. Shaking up the capital’s fashion scene from afar, each designer is a non-compromising, multi-tasking collaborator of the creative resistance. During this time of socio-political uncertainty, their journeys remind us of the importance of being brave, breaking rules and delighting in difference - defying expectations and fighting for what you believe in. The Topshop Unique Catwalk Show at London Fashion Week 2016 | Runway To Retail
This season’s inspiration for Topshop Unique came from the market itself. “We looked back to the heyday of London fashion in the late ’80s, when markets were everywhere,” Topshop Creative Director Kate Phelan told us backstage. “There was Camden, Kensington, Hyper Hyper… these fashion emporiums opened up so many diverse styles; it’s that great individual British style that comes through in today’s collection.” Watch how Topshop’s London Fashion Week initiative, Runway-to-Retail, debuted globally on the 18th September 2016. Shop the collection now: http://bit.ly/2cjpvGJ This season Topshop offered consumers the opportunity to shop a carefully selected edit of Topshop Unique pieces directly from the runway, in store, online and at our new showspace in East London’s Old Spitalfields Market. Arizona Muse, Olivia Palermo, Ellie Goulding and Erin O'Connor sat front row to watch the new supers including Taylor Hill, Stella Maxwell and Lineisy Montero strut down the catwalk in the '80s-inspired collection. in a world of speculation - Part 1 // CSM Art Direction for Fashion
The visuals are based around the theme of transience, detachment from the present, vulnerability in relation to the surrounding, searching for something without finding it. The heroine wanders through the streets of London, she’s in her own world and thoughts, her body is present but the mind oscillates beyond the matter. The Fashion Family Every Young Designer Wants to Join
Fashion East, the legendary London-based non-profit mentorship scheme, has quietly disrupted the London Fashion Week schedule for the last 17 years. Carefully selected by a panel with razor sharp fashion sensibilities, six rising designers get the opportunity to be sponsored, mentored and guided by the team; from the classroom all the way to the catwalk, and beyond. In the first episode of i-D’s latest documentary, we get to know Fashion East’s founder and director, Lulu Kennedy, and the elusive team behind the runway, who together have steered the careers of Gareth Pugh, Craig Green, Wales Bonner, Henry Holland, Martine Rose, Kim Jones, Charles Jeffrey, Matty Bovan and JW Anderson, amongst a myriad of other unique quintessentially British designers, all from an attic at the top of a winding staircase at their East London HQ. We’re introduced to current designers including A Sai Ta and his nomadic-influenced ‘global aesthetic,’ derived from a Western perception of his Chinese-Vietnamese heritage, and fashion pranksters Rottingdean Bazaar, who drop in on a seaside Zumba class in their hometown on the south coast. Elsewhere, at the Royal Albert Hall, the 2017 Fashion Awards are looming, and Fashion East alumni are nominated in the star-studded line-up. Join us as we witness a season within Fashion East, the scheme that put young London fashion on the map. Chai London -- NYC & Miami Fashion Designer
CHAI LONDON is a luxury designer men's clothing brand. Creative director, Chai-Lee was born and raised in the UK, where she pursued the fashion industry and graduated with Honors from a fashion design course. She commenced her first internship with an Italian designer in Central London. As an intern as part of a small company she had to have a versatile approach to the daily task. These varied from pattern making, fabric sourcing and overseeing manufacturing; which gave her a well-rounded understanding. This prompted her first womenswear collection in 2011 - Chai-Lee Shrayn. In Summer 2013 Chai-Lee moved to New York City to pursue a job opportunity with Ralph Lauren. After being on the design team for two years she began to feel restricted and missed the excitement of seeing her own designs come to life. Chai-Lee then moved forwards to revive her womenswear line and introduce it to the American market. Living in a foreign country presented numerous challenges which led her to step outside of her comfort zone and design her menswear collection. As the creative director, Chai-Lee takes pride in handpicking fine quality fabrics and trimmings from the heart of the garment district in New York City. With a commitment to creating timeless yet innovative pieces, suitable for fashion forward men who have a contemporary wardrobe and modern lifestyle. The designer takes conventional wardrobe staples and presents a combination of raglan cuts mixed with sporty urban conceptual aesthetic. The collection represents the designers upbringing and experiences, aiming to unite traditional British tailoring and influences from urban American culture - bridging the gap between the distinction of formal and casual wear. Art Direction students visit Silversun Media Group - INSEEC London
Recently our Sup de Pub students in Art Direction had the opportunity to visit Silversun Media Group at their head office in London, a top visual communications business with three divisions: Agency/Brand, Educational/Corporate, and Digital Entertainment. Students were given advice about the film industry and on how to best maintain themselves professionally. The most important part of getting a foothold in the industry is networking and building personal relationships. According to Chris Skarratt, Co-founder & deputy managing director of Silversun Media Group, gaining the experience of talking to people and developing relationships with industry professionals is just as important as gaining experience through the learning process. " ... personal relationships are probably the most important part of developing your career. Once you have that portfolio, understanding and skillset, how do you exploit it? Get those personal relationships in place, they will take you a long way on your journey to becoming an Art Director of the future." During the visit, students were able to gain valuable insights from Kylie Lewis, Art Director at OgilvyOne Worldwide, an agency specializing in Customer Engagement, on how best to look for that first big job, " I think it would probably be to your advantage to look for agencies who actually have French clients," she said. "A lot of work will be translated into other countries, especially worldwide campaigns. So, if you've got a bit more of an international understanding, then that's really going to put you in good stead." Interested in an International Career in film and advertising? Daria Shapovalova on Fashion Insiders: Marc Ascoli, creative director
What is the role of art director in fashion? A coach, a friend, a maestro of an orchestra - all this can be attributed to Marc Ascoli, a driving force behind some of fashion's most provocative and memorable imagery, as he is described by the world famous SHOWSTUDIO. Ascoli also has a unique sense for new talents - he discovered an array of photographers, who are now shaping the face of the industry; David Sims, Nick Knight, Mert & Marcus and Max Vadukul, all started their careers hand-in-hand with Marc. His work for and Jil Sander, Yohji Yamamoto, Martine Sitbon, are now part of a fashion history. His collaboration with Martine Sitbon, from Rue du Mail, is a very important part of his life - both personal and professional. He has been working with Rue du Mail since 1987 as an image director.
