The Gifford family left their home in Washington in 2008 to sail around the world. They have not stopped since. We met up with them in the summer of 2016 in Noank, Connecticut to learn their story and to see how they all live on a 47-foot sailboat. Follow the Giffords on their journey. Do you know how the early sailors navigate the oceans? The technology today makes it real easy to navigate the oceans. But it's very interesting to know how the early sailors managed to navigate without it. There's a lot of history on it. I tried my best to compile some important and interesting parts of it into this video. http://www.engvid.com/ Learn important, basic words you will need when you travel. Knowing a little English vocabulary can help a lot when you are travelling. Whever you are going in the world, you can almost always find someone who speaks some English. I'll teach you how a "tourist attraction" is different from a "tourist trap". What about "sight seeing"? Do you know what an "itinerary" is? Do you have your travel documents? Get ready for your English to take flight! http://www.engvid.com/travel-vocabulary/ Hi. James, from EngVid. I was just about to plan my vacation. I'm going to take a long flight to Europe. I'm trying to remember luggage and baggage things, you know? It's kind of hard to do. But this is a lesson for you if you've been working a lot, you need some time off. Now, there's a video I would like you to go check out. That's on time off. It goes with this one. You might want to go away somewhere and not just stay home, right? So this video is for you. This is basic vocabulary on vacation. When you leave and maybe you go to an English speaking country and you want to practice your English, this stuff will be good for you to enjoy your time there, also to make it easy for you when you arrive. Are you ready? Let's go to the board. Mr. E, Mr. E! It's a mystery where he is. It's no mystery. And you thought I forgot. Mr. E has been on vacation with me, and he's enjoying this particular attraction. So let's go to the board. Now, if you're going to go on vacation, one of the first things you will have to do if you're leaving your country is you're going to need some travel documents. What are those? Documents. A "document" is a paper or something with information that tells you something is okay or outlines it for you. For example, your passport is a document given by the government with your picture on it that says you are a citizen of this country, and you are legal. You are a good person. Okay? Now, when you're leaving for a flight, or you want to go to another country, you're going to need travel documents first. Trust me; show up at the airport and go, "I leave now. I go to Canada." They will go, "And the car is that way. Go home, crazy man. Okay?" So we need travel documents. So what are "travel documents"? Well, "travel documents" would be your passport, government identification, usually needed at most places the travel. Inside of a country, not necessary for most places. But leaving the country, you have to have it. Okay? So if you're in the European Union, no problem. If you're in Canada and the United States, you don't need one. But as soon as you leave these countries, you need a passport. What's another thing you need? Well, you need what's called a "boarding pass". If you play soccer, you kick the ball; the other guy, he catches it; you "pass" right? The ball goes from one player to another. A "boarding pass" is what allows you to go from one country to another country. You show the person on the airplane this piece of paper with your passport, and they say, "You know what? You can come on the plane and fly, like the pass." Kick, catch, other country. Cool? All right. So these are your travel documents. You need those. Now, I should have started with you need to make a plan because you want to go visit some place. You want to go on vacation, right? And if you want to go on vacation, well, going to have to -- I said "vacation". A "vacation" is a holiday, another word for saying "time off from work". All right? So you want to go on vacation. Sometimes, we say, "We're going to vacation in Italy." Or "on my vacation, I want to visit Italy." Or "I'm taking a holiday in Italy." Okay? So all these words, when people say, "Well, what are you doing on your time off?" You might go, "I'm going on vacation." Then they know you're leaving. If you just say, "I'm taking time off from work", you could be home cleaning. But no. You're saying, "I'm going on vacation." They're going to go, "Where are you going to visit? Italy, perhaps? Sicily? Is it going to be a good holiday?" And you go, "Yes. I earned my time." "Earned" means to work for something. "I earned my time off. I'm going on vacation."

Over the past four months I’ve travelled to 11 countries and four continents with a program called Semester at Sea. It’s been such a humbling and eye-opening opportunity I wish everyone could experience. Not only did I learn more about the world by immersing myself in a new culture and environment every week, but it was also a period of personal growth. Thank you to all my friends for exploring the world with me and making this trip one I’ll never forget. Most importantly though, THANK YOU mom, dad, and grandpa for giving me the world!! I could not have done it without your help!! Thanks for watching! You could have spent those five minutes doing something else, but you decided to watch my video, so that's pretty cool :) Please like and subscribe!! I also have vlogs from Japan, China, Vietnam, and Myanmar if you would like to see what I did in those countries. See you next time :) -------------------- Follow me to see my photos from the trip!! ==== INSTAGRAM ==== Me - https://www.instagram.com/morganbillstein

Think you can't afford to travel the world? Well I have 20 ways for you to see the world without spending a penny (mostly). Couchsurfing: www.couchsurfing.org WWOOFING: wwoofinternational.org Work away: www.workaway.info #1: Couchsurfing Couchsuring is an awesome way to connect with locals and get a bed/sofa for free! We can all appreciate a free bed for a night! Check out 10 Reasons Why You Should Try CouchSurfing! #2: WOOFING WOOFING is a great way to get to know a country and it’s culture by working a few hours a day in return for bed and board. Mainly set out on rural properties this is a very popular option for backpackers looking to save money! #3: Homestay/Work Away Similar to WOOFING, you do a few hours work in return for accommodation. Whether you are just helping around the house or assisting with your hosts business, you get your accommodation for free! #4: House Sitting Lots of people hate to leave their home unoccupied whilst they go away on holiday or for business. So, they like to have someone trustworthy to look after their place and maybe even ask for you to feed their pets! Completely free and you can find some pretty incredible places to look after! #5: Volunteer abroad There are a lot of volunteer options however most like to charge you to do it! Do plenty of research or contact an organisation directly to see if you can help them out in return for bed and board! #6: Dumpster Diving Hate how shopping centres throw away tonnes of perfectly edible food at the end of each day? Why not grab it for yourself! Just be aware that this is illegal in some countries so check before you dive on in! #7: Hitchhiking Seen by a lot of people to be dangerous, hitchhiking is a popular option for many travellers who want to travel long distances without spending a lot of money. #8: Work for Accommodation Lots of hostels especially in Australia offer a work exchange! Normally the hours are long and you will either be working the reception or cleaning toilets, however, as accommodation is your largest expense, it will save you a small fortune! #9: Free Food Bins Most hostels have big boxes situated in the kitchen area where backpackers can drop any unwanted food items before they check out. #10: Camping Want to be one with nature? Camping is a great option and sometimes can be completely free! #11: Exchange your skills Can you cut hair? Make bracelets? Do henna? Why not exchange these skills for a couple of bucks in your hostel or even a free drink? Great way to meet people, have fun and make a few extra bucks! #12: Work in a travel relate industry This is the big one. If you want to settle into a career and travel at the same time then there are a lot of options available to you! Why not work as a travel agent? A tour rep? Lots of careers will require you to move about and normally the company will cover all your costs! #13: Walk or Cycle The cost of transportation will significantly dent your bank balance, so why not opt to walk instead of taking the bus or hailing a taxi? Keeps you fit and is nicer on your budget! Why not challenge yourself to a big cycle cross-country? #14: Frequent flyer points It may take a bit of time but signing up to a programme will pay off in the end when you can get yourself a cheeky ticket to somewhere tropical for nothing! #15: Car sharing Check out local listing websites to see if any fellow travellers or even locals are looking for another person. Sometimes they like you to split the costs but sometimes they just want some company! You can travel a lot of miles and makes some awesome friends! #16: Car moving Car hire companies are always looking for people to relocate their cars. When someone hires a car in Melbourne and drops it in Sydney, they need someone to drive it back! M #17: Work on a boat or cruise ship Sure the hours are painfully long but being out at sea means you can barely spend a cent of your earnings. Travel the world, get paid, work hard and then you will have a load of money to go and play with! #18: Visit Free Attractions! Fill your days with free attractions such as national parks, free art galleries, local museums and historical monuments! #19: Travel blogging Granted, it takes years to build a blog up and even then there is no guarantee it will cover all of your expenses but if you have the determination and vision to make this a reality, the rewards are incredible! #20: Enjoy the simple pleasures in life DON'T FORGET TO BECOME A LITTLE PSYCHO: http://goo.gl/GnWOIt Social media is sexy: Facebook: http://goo.gl/K0u8pa Twitter: http://goo.gl/FsbWJR Pinterest: http://goo.gl/qgRD4v Instagram: http://goo.gl/abzups SnapChat: @PsychoTraveller My blog: http://goo.gl/5zP0dG Business email: psychotraveller22 at gmail dot com

In this video we meet Elayna & Riley, an Australian couple living on a sailboat. Their boat, the SV La Vagabonde, is a 43.4 foot Beneteau Cyclades that Riley bought in Italy. The couple have been living on the boat for over a year, and sailed it from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, with a fairly smooth Atlantic crossing in between. Once they get their fill of the Caribbean they'll be sailing to Australia and possibly continuing on from there to do a complete circumnavigation of the globe. On board they have 2 flexible solar panels and a wind generator for power, and a water maker to turn salt water into fresh drinking water. The couple had very little sailing experience to start with but they learned the ropes quite quickly. We would be hesitant to do the same without taking some sailing courses but it seems to have worked out really well for these guys; and we love watching videos of their adventures. You can follow them on YouTube & via their blog: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZdQjaSoLjIzFnWsDQOv4ww http://sailing-lavagabonde.com You can also see a tour of their sailboat here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKm2FX9kKZ4 Thanks for watching! Iran is opening its doors to foreigners and a train ride from the Persian Gulf to the Caspian Sea is a great way to get to know the country and its people. The travel restrictions that are now being lifted were in place for decades. Many Iranians are hoping they will now be able to lead a freer life – and we meet many of these hospitable and welcoming people on our journey through the Middle Eastern nation. The country’s most important rail link, the Trans-Iranian Railway, runs for approximately 1400 kilometers from the Persian Gulf via Teheran to the Caspian Sea. The journey starts in Khorramshahr on the Shatt al-Arab, the river border between Iraq and Iran. Traveling past oil fields, the train reaches Shushtar. One of the top sights here is the historic hydraulic system, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After that, the train heads up into the Zagros Mountains. The journey is interrupted by a break for prayer. Breath-taking landscapes move past the train window until we reach the highest point not only of our journey but of the entire rail network: 2,200 meters above sea level between Dorud and Arak. During a brief stop in Qom, travelers can refuel with sohan, a pastry made of wheat germ, flour and sugar. The next section of the track is high-speed and we continue on to Teheran at 160 km/h. The metropolitan area is home to more than 15 million people. The last leg takes us to the north of the country. In the Alborz Mountains, we find out what role the Trans-Iranian Railway played during Stalin’s major offensive against the German army in World War II. Our oriental rail adventure ends in Bandar-e Torkaman on the Caspian Sea. _______ Exciting, powerful and informative – DW Documentary is always close to current affairs and international events. A Horse With No Name On the first part of the journey, I was looking at all the life. There were plants and birds. and rocks and things, There was sand and hills and rings. The first thing I met, was a fly with a buzz, And the sky, with no clouds. The heat was hot, and the ground was dry, But the air was full of sound. I've been through the desert on a horse with no name, It felt good to be out of the rain. In the desert you can remember your name, 'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain. La, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la La, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la After two days, in the desert sun, My skin began to turn red. After three days, in the desert fun, I was looking at a river bed. And the story it told, of a river that flowed, Made me sad to think it was dead. You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name, It felt good to be out of the rain. In the desert you can remember your name, 'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain. La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la After nine days, I let the horse run free, 'Cause the desert had turned to sea. There were plants and birds, and rocks and things, There was sand and hills and rings. The ocean is a desert, with its life underground, And a perfect disguise above. Under the cities lies, a heart made of ground, But the humans will give no love. You see I've been through the desert on a horse with no name, It felt good to be out of the rain. In the desert you can remember your name, 'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain. La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la La, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la La, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la La la, la, la la la la, la la la, la, la

It's time for another Japanese food mukbang where we just eat and chat with you guys! In this video, we visit Family Mart, another popular Japanese convenience store where you can find all sorts of ready-to-go meals. This is actually the second largest convenience store chain in Japan after 7Eleven, so we wanted to show you some of the foods you can find there. For this video, we picked a lot of new things and ate some mystery items - turns out GoogleTranslate can't always decipher what the packaging says! We had some pickled plum chips, a seaweed pasta that smelled like the sea, a carbonara pasta that for some reason had corn, a solid bar of red beans, and some other intriguing but not quite identifiable items. We also talked a lot about our time in Japan, what it's like travelling in summer, and why I (Audrey) can't deal with red bean paste anymore - wait for my French bakery story. We hope you enjoy this casual Japanese food mukbang and stay tuned for another convenience store meal; we still need to show you what you can eat at Lawson to complete the Japanese convenience store trifecta! ;) * * * * * * * * * * GEAR WE USE Panasonic GH5: http://amzn.to/2yqTUyi Canon G7X ii: http://amzn.to/2yqtM6B Rode Video Micro: http://amzn.to/2wTguTM Joby Gorilla Pod: http://amzn.to/1PgoY5F SanDisk 16GB Extreme Pro: http://amzn.to/25KEErs * * * * * * * * * * SOCIAL MEDIA & TRAVEL BLOGS AUDREY: blog: http://thatbackpacker.com/ instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thatbackpacker/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thatbackpacker twitter: https://twitter.com/ThatBackpacker SAMUEL: blog: http://nomadicsamuel.com/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nomadicsamuel twitter: https://twitter.com/NomadicSamuel instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nomadicsamuel/ * * * * * * * * * * Hey guys! We are Samuel and Audrey, a vlogging travel couple from Canada. In this travel channel, we share our travel and food vlogs while touring the world. Our most recent trip was to Japan where we spent 2 months travelling around the country and visiting the following destinations: Osaka, Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Nikko, Takayama, Yokohama, Odaiba, Shirakawa-gō and Takao. During our stay, we visited a mixture of big cities and small rural towns, where we enjoyed eating Japanese street food, trying traditional Japanese cuisine, visiting local attractions and staying in unique accommodations (such as capsule hotels and ryokans) that we are now going to share with you on this channel. The combination and contrast of visiting futuristic cities and traditional countryside areas is what makes travel to Japan so fascinating. Ultra modern versus traditional. This is the essence of Japan. Our trip to Japan was unforgettable and until now it is one of our favourite countries that we have come to know. However, we only feel as though we just scratched the surface on this trip to Japan. If you want to see more videos from Japan in the future, let us know in the comments that places you'd like us to travel to and food experiences you would like to see on this travel channel. http://www.wanderlust.co.uk/ExploreAustralia From the rugged Outback to the glittering Southern Ocean, South Australia is known for its wildlife, food, wine and beauty. South Australia is vast, spanning nearly half a million square miles. With a population of around one point six million people, that’s just four people per square mile. Kangaroo Island is Australia’s third largest, and home to a remarkable range of wildlife. With over 800 native species of plants and rare sights like the endangered glossy black cockatoo, Kangaroo Island is typified by unspoiled wilderness and a magnificent selection of flora and fauna, including the kangaroos that give it its name. Just over a thousand sea lions live and breed in the Seal Bay Conservation Park, one of the most popular tourist attractions of Kangaroo Island. Marine life thrives all across the shores of South Australia. The state’s coastline stretches for more than 3,000 miles, and after a flight of just 40 minutes from Adelaide the mighty Eyre Peninsula awaits. Baird Bay is a small fishing village situated on the west of the peninsula. Snorkelling here isn’t a typical experience, as the the coastal waters are home to Australian sea lions and pods of dolphins. Adelaide, the state capital city, was founded in 1836 as a planned, freely settled colony. It was a place where immigrants could settle free from religious persecution. Nowadays the city remains a vibrant, bustling cultural centre, home to thriving markets, a lively night scene and dozens of festivals a year. From Adelaide’s beautiful architecture to a wealth of museums detailing its immigrant settlers, Adelaide does not shy away from its multicultural history. For example, the South Australian Museum houses the largest collection of Aboriginal ethnographic material in the world. Climbing away from the coast and the bustle of the city are the quiet, rural hills of the Barossa Valley. The Barossa is world-renowned for its red wine, and over 150 wineries lie within an hour’s drive from Adelaide. But the Barossa is not only home to wine. It’s one of the world’s top culinary destinations. The vibrancy of South Australia doesn’t end in Barossa. Follow the Stuart Highway north, beyond the hills and the vineyards of the Clare Valley to where green turns to red and the Outback begins. For many the jewel in the crown of this region is the dramatic stretch of rock known fondly as the ‘Organ Pipes’. Gawler Range. Enormous, solid volcanic rhyolite is stacked in the cliff face here, ranging in size from stony grinning teeth to the elongated pillars that remind so many people of magnificent organs. The rugged landscape of the Flinders Ranges epitomises the romanticism of outback Australia: big skies, incredible sunsets, and sun-baked desert as far as the eye can see. In the summer it’s a hot, dry landscape. It might seem daunting at first, but look a bit closer and you’ll find the place teeming with life. The Flinders Ranges have also been inhabited by humans for thousands of years. Aborigines have walked in these hills since long before European settlers arrived, using the plants and the rocks for food and creating art. The Flinders Ranges are now home to numerous towns and villages scattered along the highway. The area is accessible as a destination for hiking, cycling, camping and wildlife watching, giving visitors a taste of the iconic outback. Rawnsley Park Station is a working farm that has managed to find a way to blend sheep farming and tourism. The owners provide scenic flights over the spectacular geological formation, Wilpena Pound. Wilpena Pound is an ancient valley floor amidst mountains that have been eroded over hundreds of millions of years. Its golden walls are formed of highly resistant quartzite and sandstone. The area is protected from mining and most human impact other than tourism. Nowadays, 4x4s can be seen roaming along the ridgetops that command spectacular views of the timeless landscape. Life can nevertheless be found all over the northern reaches of South Australia. The emu is a large, flightless bird, endemic to Australia and a close relation of the ostrich. Its long legs allow it to reach speeds of up to 30 miles an hour. It has become an iconic image of Australia. Continuing up the spine of the country, we reach the northern regions of South Australia. This is opal mining country, and the Painted Desert may seem barren, but can be extremely lucrative for those willing to work. The town of Coober Pedy is the opal mining capital of the world, known for the way its people live underground in dugouts to escape the fierce desert heat. We’ve travelled from the crystal waters of the Southern Ocean to the dry beauty of the outback, covering one of the most magnificent states in Australia. The Explorers’ Way crosses the state border, slicing the country in half as it continues into the Northern Territory.

In which John Green teaches you about Vikings! That's right, one of our most requested subjects, the Vikings, right here on Crash Course. So what's the deal with Vikings? Well, the stuff you've heard about them may not be true. The Vikings weren't just pagan raiders striking terror into the hearts of defenseless European Christendom. They were some of the greatest travelers of their time, and they weren't always traveling to steal. In a lot of cases, they were traveling to trade. John will teach you about Viking trade goods, Norse Mythology, and yes, there will be blood, guts, and dragons. OK? With a population of only 300,000, Iceland can feel like the most isolated place on earth, yet its capital Reykjavik, is only a three-hour flight from London and just under six from New York. Reykjavik is relaxed and welcoming, yet possesses a cultural life that holds its own against other European capitals. Most buildings are built simple and low to beat the North Atlantic winds. However, the city is also graced with grand civic architecture inspired by Iceland’s natural beauty, such as the soaring central tower of Hallgrímskirkja. Many of the country’s most popular sights are within easy reach of Reykjavík. Immerse yourself in the spirit of Iceland, at the Blue Lagoon. Then spend a day or two in The Golden Circle, an area which encompasses three of Iceland’s greatest natural wonders; Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir Geothermal Field, and Gullfoss. Iceland’s main ring road strings together an endless series of epic landscapes. Less than two hours drive east of Reykjavik are two of the world’s most beautiful waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. Continue eastward towards Vík, Iceland’s southern-most village, where you’ll find the dramatic landscapes of Black Beach, Reynisdrangar, and Dyrholaey. Follow the ring road for another two hours into the ethereal light of Jökulsárlón Lake, where icebergs break away from Europe’s largest glacier and float for years before tumbling out to sea. Head north and feel the earth rumble at Europe’s mightiest waterfall, Dettifoss. Then explore the Myvatn region, a tranquil lake surrounded by nature in all its violent beauty. Take a careful walk through the boiling landscape of Namafjall, lose yourself amid the lava pillars of Dimmuborgir, and peer into the caldera of Krafla Volcano. Known as the Capital of the North, Akureyri is the perfect place to warm up and enjoy some creature comforts, before heading off into the wilds again. In Iceland, every side road is a story waiting to unfold. So come, and live your own Icelandic story, it’s one you’ll keep telling for the rest of your days. https://www.expedia.com/Iceland.d79.Destination-Travel-Guides -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow us on social media: Twitter: https://twitter.com/Expedia Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/expedia Instagram: http://instagram.com/expedia Pinterest: http://www.pinterest.com/Expedia/ Google+: https://plus.google.com/+Expedia -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow us on our travel blog, Viewfinder: http://viewfinder.expedia.com/

8 creepiest ocean facts & discoveries! History’s creepiest facts about the ocean & creatures of the deepest surface! These mysterious ocean facts are still unknown. Subscribe for new videos: http://goo.gl/SaufF4 Follow us on Instagram: @theywillkillyou Voiceover by Carl Mason: [email protected] 8: The Basking Shark After the whale shark, the basking shark also known as Cetorhinus Maximus is the world’s second largest species of fish. The largest known specimen was measured at approximately 40 feet and weighed almost 20 tons. One of the basking shark’s most distinguishable features is its massive cavernous jaws 7: Barbeled Dragonfish The Barbeled Dragonfish is the best known species of Deep-sea dragonfish, and it belongs to the Strombidae family. It lives in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean where light does not reach and plant life is absent. The Barbeled Dragonfish produce light through organs called photophores and their skeletons are adapted to life in the deep ocean. They usually live at depths of 4.920 to 13,000 feet 6: White Shark Café In an area located halfway between the Hawaii Islands and the Guadalupe Islands, male, female and juvenile white sharks gather during spring and winter. The reason for this behavior is still unknown. The area has a radius of around 160 miles and in 2002 researchers from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute gave it the unofficial name of White Shark Café. The researchers had tracked the sharks to the area using satellite tracking tags. They had initially believed that the sharks travelled there for mating purposes. However, continuous study of the area revealed that juvenile sharks also travelled there and thus the true reason for this migration pattern 5: Heracleion Approximately 1.500 years ago the Ancient Egyptian city of Thonis, which the Greeks later named Heracleion, was engulfed by the Mediterranean Sea. It was once a prosperous port, according to 5th century BC Greek historian Herodotus, which had been visited by Helen of Troy and Paris, her Trojan lover. The legend says that the mythical hero Heracles, also known as Hercules, had once passed through the city as well. In his honor the Greeks renamed the city Heracleion. The city represents one of the greatest archeological discoveries of the 21st century. In 2001 a team lead by Frank Goddio, a French marine archaeologist, found the relics of the lost city under the waters of Aboukir Bay, approximately 20 miles north-east of Alexandria. Goddio’s team found numerous artifacts which indicated 4: The Vast and Dark Unknown According to National Geographic “There are more artifacts from human history at the bottom of the ocean than there are in all the museums on the planet combined.” The ocean has an average depth of around 12.400 feet. Since light can only penetrate approximately 330 feet, most of the ocean’s secrets are shrouded in darkness. So far only around five per cent of the ocean has been explored. There are around 1 million species of animals and plants that have been found 3: Abyssal Gigantism The largest known colossal squid specimen was discovered on the 22nd of February 2007. It weighed over one thousand pounds and measured a total length of around fifteen feet. Colossal squids also have the largest eyes in the animal kingdom, measuring up to eleven inches in diameter. They are different from giant squids because they also have sharp hooks on their limbs instead of only having suckers lined with small teeth. In terms of mass, giant squids are lighter than colossal squids, but they generally surpass them in length with the females of the species measuring up to 43 feet. Many researchers 2: Red Tide A red tide is associated with the explosion of an algae population called dinoflagellates resulting into what is commonly known as an ‘algal bloom’. Scientists sometimes refer to red tides as HABs or harmful algal blooms due to the fact that they are deadly for certain species of marine wildlife such as birds, fish and even manatees or other larger species. These microscopic algae sometimes reproduce in a cluster thus changing the color of the water in certain oceanic areas. The most common color is a rusty shade of red but it may also range from brown to yellow or pink to orange. Red tides are usually associated with three types of algae. Karena brevia is common in the Gulf of Mexico, Alexandrium fundyense may be found from New England to Canada on the Atlantic coastline and Alexandrium 1: Inexplicable Sounds Using a network sound surveillance systems called hydrophones, the USA National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has detected a series of sounds, which they cannot fully explain. One of the most famous sounds was captured in 1997 and was nicknamed ‘The Bloop’. It is one of the loudest ocean sounds ever captured. It was heard by multiple sensors over an area of approximately 3100 miles. Dr. Christopher Fox from the NOAA excluded the possibility that the sound was man-made.
