Refugees in Europe: a crisis of connection | Dace Dzenovska | TEDxRiga

18:10
In the age of mobility, more people are on the move than ever before. Yet many of those who are on the move — the illegal migrants, are dying at sea. Is keeping people in place the best solution to the crisis of migration? Dace Dzenovska wants to take you to a different place — a place of responsible connectedness — from which to think about migration and the current crisis in the Mediterranean. Dace Dzenovska teaches and practices social anthropology at the University of Oxford, UK. Her research focuses on nationalism, state building, and migration in post-socialist contexts. Beyond her immediate areas of expertise, she is concerned with the futures that we make through our actions in the present, as well as with our shared responsibility for these futures. Dace Dzenovska turned to an academic career in anthropology after becoming disillusioned with development work as a development professional with the United Nations. She received her doctoral degree in social cultural anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley, CA, where she wrote a dissertation on post-socialist democratization and tolerance promotion—now a book manuscript called “Complicit Becoming: Tolerance Work and Europeanization After Socialism.” She has also authored multiple articles in internationally renowned journals, as well as a book on post-EU enlargement outmigration. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

European Maritime Day 2013

01:12
The European Maritime Day is celebrated annually across Europe on 20 May. It shows the importance of the sea for everyday life, and for economy and job creation, both in coastal communities and in landlocked areas across Europe. In the context of this European Maritime Day, a Conference is held in a different region each year. In 2013, this conference was held in Valetta, it focused on sustainable coastal and maritime tourism in the wider context of Blue Growth. http://ec.europa.eu/maritimeaffairs/maritimeday/

Italy's Mediterranean Mass Grave: Europe or Die

27:52
Since 2000, more than 27,000 migrants and refugees have died attempting the perilous journey to Europe. With an unprecedented number of people breaking through its heavily barricaded borders in 2014, the EU continues to fortify its frontiers. In the fourth and final episode of Europe or Die, VICE News correspondent Milène Larsson arrives in Italy as the only extensive search and rescue mission in the Mediterranean is replaced with a border surveillance mission, effectively leaving thousands of desperate migrants adrift in the sea. People Smuggling in Sicily: Europe or Die

15:31
In June the European Union (EU) responded to the huge numbers of migrants and refugees dying on its borders by launching an 11.8 million euro ($12.8m) a year naval mission. EUNAVFOR Med was launched to tackle human trafficking from North Africa, a major contributor to the migration crisis that has claimed 2,000 lives in the Mediterranean in 2015 alone. But while the EU has declared war on traffickers in Libya and elsewhere, another trade is booming on its doorstep. Land smuggling preys on desperate people hoping to escape the EU’s Dublin Regulation — whereby migrants seeking refuge are required to do so in the first country that they set foot in — and illegally cross European borders. VICE News travels to Sicily, a main stepping stone into Europe, to follow a police operation to arrest suspected smugglers at a boat landing, and meets a former member of a people trafficking network operating between Libya, Egypt, and Italy. We also find out about the land smuggling business of taking people from Sicily to northern Europe, and meet a small group of activists helping newly-arrived migrants and refugees avoid being exploited. And perhaps no one knows this better than would-be African migrants to the European Union. In North Africa, on the border of Morocco, there's a Spanish town called Melilla. It's technically Europe. So undocumented migrants and refugees, asylum seekers, wait in limbo for a chance to scale the fence and apply for asylum in Europe. It's the first of many, many hurdles. And it's a tall one. Longitude - TV movie 2000

03:14:44
In the 18th century, the only way to navigate accurately at sea was to follow a coastline all the way, which would not get you from Europe to the West Indies or the Americas. Observing the sun or stars would give you the latitude, but not the longitude unless done in conjunction with a clock that would keep time accurately at sea, and no such clock existed. After one too many maritime disasters due to navigational errors, the British Parliament set up a substantial prize for a way to find the longitude at sea. The film's main story is that of craftsman John Harrison: he built a clock that would do the job, what we would now call a marine chronometer. But the Board of Longitude was biased against this approach and claiming the prize was no simple matter. Told in parallel is the 20th century story of Rupert Gould, for whom the restoration of Harrison's clocks to working order became first a hobby, then an obsession that threatened to wreck his life.
20 WAYS TO TRAVEL FOR FREE! ...REALLY!

12:32
Think you can't afford to travel the world? Well I have 20 ways for you to see the world without spending a penny (mostly). Couchsurfing: www.couchsurfing.org WWOOFING: wwoofinternational.org Work away: www.workaway.info #1: Couchsurfing Couchsuring is an awesome way to connect with locals and get a bed/sofa for free! We can all appreciate a free bed for a night! Check out 10 Reasons Why You Should Try CouchSurfing! #2: WOOFING WOOFING is a great way to get to know a country and it’s culture by working a few hours a day in return for bed and board. Mainly set out on rural properties this is a very popular option for backpackers looking to save money! #3: Homestay/Work Away Similar to WOOFING, you do a few hours work in return for accommodation. Whether you are just helping around the house or assisting with your hosts business, you get your accommodation for free! #4: House Sitting Lots of people hate to leave their home unoccupied whilst they go away on holiday or for business. So, they like to have someone trustworthy to look after their place and maybe even ask for you to feed their pets! Completely free and you can find some pretty incredible places to look after! #5: Volunteer abroad There are a lot of volunteer options however most like to charge you to do it! Do plenty of research or contact an organisation directly to see if you can help them out in return for bed and board! #6: Dumpster Diving Hate how shopping centres throw away tonnes of perfectly edible food at the end of each day? Why not grab it for yourself! Just be aware that this is illegal in some countries so check before you dive on in! #7: Hitchhiking Seen by a lot of people to be dangerous, hitchhiking is a popular option for many travellers who want to travel long distances without spending a lot of money. #8: Work for Accommodation Lots of hostels especially in Australia offer a work exchange! Normally the hours are long and you will either be working the reception or cleaning toilets, however, as accommodation is your largest expense, it will save you a small fortune! #9: Free Food Bins Most hostels have big boxes situated in the kitchen area where backpackers can drop any unwanted food items before they check out. #10: Camping Want to be one with nature? Camping is a great option and sometimes can be completely free! #11: Exchange your skills Can you cut hair? Make bracelets? Do henna? Why not exchange these skills for a couple of bucks in your hostel or even a free drink? Great way to meet people, have fun and make a few extra bucks! #12: Work in a travel relate industry This is the big one. If you want to settle into a career and travel at the same time then there are a lot of options available to you! Why not work as a travel agent? A tour rep? Lots of careers will require you to move about and normally the company will cover all your costs! #13: Walk or Cycle The cost of transportation will significantly dent your bank balance, so why not opt to walk instead of taking the bus or hailing a taxi? Keeps you fit and is nicer on your budget! Why not challenge yourself to a big cycle cross-country? #14: Frequent flyer points It may take a bit of time but signing up to a programme will pay off in the end when you can get yourself a cheeky ticket to somewhere tropical for nothing! #15: Car sharing Check out local listing websites to see if any fellow travellers or even locals are looking for another person. Sometimes they like you to split the costs but sometimes they just want some company! You can travel a lot of miles and makes some awesome friends! #16: Car moving Car hire companies are always looking for people to relocate their cars. When someone hires a car in Melbourne and drops it in Sydney, they need someone to drive it back! M #17: Work on a boat or cruise ship Sure the hours are painfully long but being out at sea means you can barely spend a cent of your earnings. Travel the world, get paid, work hard and then you will have a load of money to go and play with! #18: Visit Free Attractions! Fill your days with free attractions such as national parks, free art galleries, local museums and historical monuments! #19: Travel blogging Granted, it takes years to build a blog up and even then there is no guarantee it will cover all of your expenses but if you have the determination and vision to make this a reality, the rewards are incredible! #20: Enjoy the simple pleasures in life DON'T FORGET TO BECOME A LITTLE PSYCHO: http://goo.gl/GnWOIt Social media is sexy: Facebook: http://goo.gl/K0u8pa Twitter: http://goo.gl/FsbWJR Pinterest: http://goo.gl/qgRD4v Instagram: http://goo.gl/abzups SnapChat: @PsychoTraveller My blog: http://goo.gl/5zP0dG Business email: psychotraveller22 at gmail dot com

Mediterranean sinking kills 200 migrants bound for Europe

02:06
More than 200 migrants are dead after the motorboats they were travelling on sank in the Mediterranean Sea, the UN's refugee agency says. "Nine were saved after four days at sea. The other 203 were swallowed by the waves," UNHCR's spokeswoman in Italy, Carlotta Sami, said on Twitter. She called the situation a "horrible and enormous tragedy". On Monday, at least 29 migrants died after the inflatable boat carrying them overturned in high seas. Seven were already dead when they were picked up near the Italian island of Lampedusa, and a further 22 succumbed to hypothermia after spending more than 18 hours on the open deck of the vessel which picked them up. The International Organization for Migration says the two boats involved in the latest tragedy had departed from the Libyan coast on Saturday. The IOM says that each boat was carrying more than 100 people when they capsized, probably on Monday. The nine survivors all speak French, and are believed to be from West Africa. Europe’s border in Africa | DW Documentary (Migration documentary)

28:26
Europe’s governments are breathing a sigh of relief as the number of refugees arriving from Africa falls. But at what price? Reporter Shafagh Laghai traces the new wall across Africa, built by the European Union. Her journey begins in Mali, where the mission of the Bundeswehr, Germany’s Armed Forces, is not just to combat terrorism but also to prevent migration. Armies around the world are under pressure, especially as they respond to threats from well beyond their own borders. The German and French armed forces, for example, are involved in a range of missions from Afghanistan to North Africa. In a bid to cut costs, some of their core functions have been outsourced to commercial enterprises. But at what price? War and defense are big business and wherever there are armed forces, the private sector is never far away. For example, Germany’s main military training ground is run by a private munitions firm. Politicians and military leaders lobby for weapons exports all over the world in support of arms manufacturers at home. Former politicians move seamlessly into the arms sector. Our two-part documentary takes us to missions abroad and talks to military, political and business leaders as it investigates just how privatized our defense forces are and what repercussions the links between the business and military worlds might have in the future. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Paul’s escape to Europe - from Cameroon to Berlin | DW Documentary (Migrants documentary)

42:31
Paul Nkamani made his way from Cameroon to Berlin. German filmmaker Jakob Preuss was able to accompany the migrant on his dangerous journey to Europe. [Online until: 02.01.2019] Theirs is an unusual friendship in a politically and historically explosive environment. “When Paul came over the sea” is a poignant documentary that transcends emotional boundaries. Paul, a migrant from Cameroon, had made his way through the Sahara to the Moroccan coast, where he was waiting for a chance to cross over to Europe by boat. In the woods near Nador, Paul met filmmaker Jakob Preuss, who was making a research trip along Europe's external borders. Paul managed to reach Spain in a dinghy but half of his fellow travelers lost their lives in the two-day crossing. And instead of receiving trauma counseling, Paul was incarcerated in a detention center. After his release, he met Jakob again in the Spanish city of Granada. Because of the economic crisis in southern Europe, Paul wanted to travel on to Germany, the former colonial power in Cameroon and the land of his dreams. Jacob had to decide whether to help Paul in his quest for a better life or remain just a passive filmmaker. In the end, the story took a turn that neither man could have imagined when they first met in the forest in Morocco. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Sub-Saharan migrants stuck in Morocco dream of reaching Europe

06:25
(28 Jun 2018) Sub-Saharan migrants escaping poverty and strife in their home countries are arriving in Morocco hoping to make it to Spain and closer to the dream of a better future in Europe. Most arrivals congregate near houses under construction in Mesnana, a neighbourhood in the city of Tangiers. Mamadou Barican arrived in Morocco seven months ago after several months spent in Algeria. He left his mother and sisters in Guinea in search of work. Barican is hoping to make it Europe where he expects to be able to find employment. Fellow Guinean Mohamed Barry and Smail Diallo share a similar story and goal. They have just arrived in Tangiers from Casablanca, but Barry has been living in Morocco for more than a year while Diallo has only been there for six months. Without jobs and prospects in Morocco, the men say their ultimate goal is to reach Europe, but to cross the sea they will have to pay around 2,000 US dollars for passage on a boat. Jean Pierre Sindouno came to Morocco from Liberia eight years ago and was able to get a residency permit, but he says he can't get a job and feels discriminated against. "Getting in a bus some people will even hold their nose, they don't even want you to sit beside them," he explained. "We've just got to risk everything to see if we can get to Europe to get a better life."   Tangiers Cathedral has become a place of refuge for many sub-Saharan migrants. Archbishop Santiago Agrelo Martinez has been working in Tangiers for 11 years and offers support to migrants who come there. He is appalled by the suffering migrants endure, saying they are treated worse than animals. "With animals that (treatment) would have never, ever been tolerated," he told the AP. "Society is aware and conscious to not allow this towards animals. But humans are allowing it to happen to our human brothers." There were approximately 35,504 migrants living in Morocco between January 1 and June 12, 2018, according to figures from the International Organisation for Migration. So far this year, 244 migrants have lost their lives between the coast of Morocco and Spain, according to the IOM. Tens of thousands of people from Africa, the Mideast or Asian countries flee violent conflicts or extreme poverty each year by attempting perilous journeys to Europe in smugglers' dinghies across the Mediterranean. The Western Mediterranean route into Spain has seen an uptick of arrivals, with nearly a third (11,792) of the 35,455 migrants rescued or making it to European shores in the first five months of 2018 according to UN figures. Earlier this month, Spain took in 630 migrants from the Aquarius rescue boat after Malta and Italy, which were closer, refused to grant the ship access to their ports. Europe's response to the migrant crisis will be at the forefront of Thursday's European Council meeting in Brussels. Crude awakening: Romania's Black Sea oil and gas finds fuel Europe's energy hopes - reporter

Huge discoveries of oil and gas in the Black Sea off Romania have thrust the country back into the heart of the region's energy market. In addition to providing much needed revenue for Bucharest as its existing wells run out, the new resources are a == boost to Europe's long-standing quest to make itself less reliant on Russian oil and gas==. Supplies from Russia are subject to geopolitical tensions between East and West and the threat of disruption is a constant worry for Europe. All the children were lost, except for one. Over the last few months, we have been tracking down the survivors and their families to try and piece together their stories. Our Africa reporter Jamal Osman travelled to Hargeisa in northern Somalia - to find the relatives of some of the Somali migrants who lost their lives on that fateful day in April.

Microsoft Says Google Blocks Competition in Europe Search Market

04:00
This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish Microsoft has fought legal battles with officials in Europe and the United States over competition in the personal computer market. But at the end of March, Microsoft accused Google of being anti-competitive. A complaint to the European Commission accused Google of unfairly controlling the Internet search market in Europe. Google was already talking to the commission about the issue and said it was happy to explain to anyone how its business works. But Google also faced other issues. Gmail users in China began reporting problems with Google's e-mail service in late February. The problems came as news of the revolutions in the Arab world filled the Internet and there were online calls for protests in China.Google said the government was interfering with its e-mail service. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu called those accusations unacceptable. But Google spokeswoman Jessica Powell said, "This is a government blockage, carefully designed to look like the problem is with Gmail." Google is the world leader in Internet search. But in China, the biggest search engine is Baidu. And in late March, China's largest Internet media company, Sina, dropped Google's search engine from its website. Sina said it would use its own technology. An estimated four hundred fifty million Chinese are online -- about half of all Internet users in Asia.In two thousand ten, Google said a cyberattack from China had attempted to get information from the Gmail accounts of human rights activists. Google also expressed concerns about censorship. So Google relocated its Chinese search engine from the mainland to Hong Kong. In March, Google also faced new problems at home. A federal judge in New York ruled against its plan to put millions of books online. Google wants to create a digital library of all the world's books. It reached a one hundred twenty-five million dollar deal in two thousand eight with groups representing writers and publishers. Google agreed to create a system to pay copyright holders when their works are used online. But Judge Denny Chin rejected the proposed settlement. He said it would give Google monopoly control of the book search market. But he left open the possibility for a new plan.On a similar issue, Baidu in China said it removed almost three million documents from its library. Writers have complained that Baidu did not have permission for their works to appear on its document-sharing site. For VOA Special English, I'm Alex Villarreal. Italy Is Paying Libya To Intercept Migrants On The Mediterranean (HBO)

09:22
In the first six months of 2017, the number of migrants crossing the Mediterranean from Libya to Italy dropped by around half. This drastic fall in numbers was likely a result of the $236 million deal signed in February, in which Italy funds and trains the Libyan coastguards to divert migrants right back to Libya. While the Italian government sees this as reason for celebration, the brunt of the migration crisis is now firmly on Libya. This is a problem given that the UN-backed Libyan Government of National Accord doesn't have the means to effectively handle migrant trafficking and relies on the country's 1,700 militias to do the job for them. By outsourcing this work to armed groups who themselves are implicated in smuggling, a bloody power struggle has erupted. Vice News Tonight was the first foreign media to reach Libya's migrant smuggling epicenter of Sabratha, and met the migrants caught up in the mayhem. Protan AS: Extreme conditions at 71 degrees north requires extreme solutions

01:01
- It is extreme, completely extreme. You can climb onto the roof and find large rocks that have been thrown up by the wind. The continuous gales from the Barents Sea make this a demanding job. The words belong to Head of Markets, Svein Erik Dalheim at Protan Takservice, based in Alta, Northern Norway. The company has recently refurbished the northernmost mainland roof in Norway, at the very frontier towards the icy seas: North Cape (Nordkapp). The cliff, situated at 71 degrees north, is a place of extremes, offering some of the harshest conditions Norway can offer. The view from the edge, 307 meteres above sea level, is spectacular. This destination is where people from all over the world meet, to experience Ultima Thule, at the top of Europe.

EU's Federica Mogherini: EU fears 'Rule of Jungle' may win over Rule of Law

01:22:24
EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini expressed fear that the "rule of the jungle" may prevail over the rule of law in global relations as important international treaties are being challenged. Mogherini was speaking at the Harvard Kennedy School for Science and International Affairs in Boston, United States. 'Today, I am afraid we have to admit that such a new world order has never truly materialised and worse, there is a real risk today that the rule of the jungle replaces the rule of law. The same international treaties — so many in which we are together — that ended the Cold War are today put into question', Mogherini said at the Harvard Kennedy School for Science and International Affairs. According to Mogherini, instead of constructing a new world order, it is better to invest 'in preventing the current rules from being dismantled'. The diplomat has also repeatedly stressed the importance of close cooperation between the European Union and the United States for building a fair world order. During her speech, Mogherini also mentioned the recent incident with the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) detaining Ukrainian ships in the Sea of Azov for illegal border crossing. We have seen in these very weeks that we share the same interest in addressing Russia's violation of Ukraine's territorial integrity: only together can Europe and America face the challenges that Russia poses on European soil, but also elsewhere… And the current events in the Sea of Azov are somehow — I would not say the inevitable consequence, because things like that should always be avoidable but — the direct consequence of a clear violation of the basic rules of peaceful co-existence on European territory', Mogherini said.
