West Sea Barrage (North Korean propaganda film) 2/3

08:34
The controversial Nampho Dam or West Sea Dam, also known as the West Sea Barrage, is a barrage located 15 km west of the special city of Nampho, North Korea. It is a huge, eight-kilometer-long system of dams, three lock chambers, and 36 sluices, allowing the passage of ships up to 50,000 tons. The dam closes the Taedong River off from the Yellow Sea. It was built from 1981 to 1986, with the resources of the whole country directed to this main construction project. The stated goal of the West Sea Dam was: The raising of the water level in the Taedong River and increased ship traffic; The prevention of seawater intrusion into the fresh water, thus solving the water supply problem; The irrigation of additional land, enlarging the arable territory of the region. Foreign critics claim raising the Taedong river level has led to the loss of valuable farmland, contributing to North Korean famine. The dam is considered a major accomplishment of North Korea. It is a commonly seen backdrop for North Korean television news broadcasts on KCNA, and is a stop for international tourists. The locks are at geographical coordinates 38°41′N 125°10′E. The dam's estimated total cost was $4 billion (US).

S. Korea and China resume joint fishing patrols in West Sea

00:46
한중 어업지도선 공동순시 2년여 만에 재개 South Korea and China are resuming their joint patrols on illegal fishing activities in the West Sea. According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries on Tuesday,… the two sides have decided to conduct joint inspections in the jointly-managed provisional water zone. The joint patrols have been on hold since 2016 when the Korean Coast Guard used force to seize a Chinese vessel fishing illegally in Korean waters,… resulting three Chinese fishermen dying from smoke inhalation. Each country's coast guard will monitor operations by unregistered ships, violations of territorial waters and obstruction of official duties in the zones. Some 200 Chinese boats have been caught for illegal fishing activities this year,… down 12 percent from a year earlier. N. Korea deploys high-speed infiltration boats to West Sea: Seoul

北, ′파도 관통형 고

01:44
The South Korean military says North Korea has recently deployed a high-speed wave-piercing boat... with stealth capabilities to its west coast. Observers have raised concerns about the new vessels,... which are difficult for radar to detect. Our Laah Hyun-kyung has this story. North Korea′s VSV, or Very Slender Vessel, can pierce through waves... at high speeds of more than 90 kilometers per hour even in heavy seas. Military officials in Seoul say the vessel the regime deployed to a naval command in the West Sea... seems to be carrying 30 millimeter guns... and is capable of launching torpedoes. South Korea has been aware that Pyongyang was building the vessels... and around four to five are said to be in operation. But this is the first time military officials have admitted that the boats have been deployed... and spotted near the de-facto inter-Korean maritime border in the West Sea. Experts say this is a huge threat to South Korea′s front-line islands... especially because the boats are covered with stealth paint... making it more difficult for the South Korean Navy to detect them by radar. They add... Seoul will have to review and revise its naval strategy against the North because South Korea′s fastest boats... are guided-missile patrol gun boats with maximum speeds of about 70 kilometers per hour. In response to Wednesday′s reports... Seoul′s defense ministry said it is keeping a close eye on the development,... adding that the military is on stand-by to immediately counter any and every type of provocation from the North. Seoul is planning to deploy 70-millimeter, ground-based guided missiles by next year... to deter threats posed by the regime′s air-cushion vehicles and the new vessels. Laah Hyun-kyung, Arirang News.

For S. Korea, West Sea represents a history of conflict

04:14
서해수호의 날 기념 On this fourth Friday of March, Koreans remember those who sacrificed their lives to defend their nation... along the inter-Korean sea border in the West Sea. An overview of what makes the West Sea such a contentious area that's so ripe for conflict: our news feature tonight with Kim Jung-soo. The attack on the Cheonan warship was the deadliest ever in the West Sea, claiming the lives of 46 young South Korean sailors. The remains of the vessel are on display in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi-do Province by the South Korean Navy's Second Fleet. "Coming here and learning about it, I start thinking about the possibility that the soldiers could have been part of my family, and that their pains could also have been mine." "I feel devastated by the sight. I think the navy must become stronger... and I hope the world knows about North Korea's actions." "The sinking of the Cheonan warship back in 2010 serves as a grim reminder of the fact that peace on the Korean peninsula is not a given, but must be achieved with dedication and sacrifice. Seven years later, however, security conditions in the West Sea have become increasingly complex, making peace a much more difficult goal to attain." At the heart of the security issue is the Northern Limit Line, the maritime border between North and South Korea in the West Sea that runs along five major islands: Baengnyeong-do, Daecheong-do, Socheong-do, Yeonpyeong-do and U-do. "The concept of the Northern Limit Line was absent from the armistice agreement signed between the UN Command, North Korea and China in July of 1953. Then on August 30th of the same year, the UN Command unilaterally announced the boundaries of the NLL... to keep its own ships from heading up north... and notified North Korea. And for the next 20 years, North Korea didn't make any claims disputing the boundary." But the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, finalized in 1982, which granted member nations territorial rights over waters less than 12 nautical miles off their coastlines... emboldened North Korea to make its own claims. In 1999, the North proposed its own version of the Northern Limit Line, saying it had assumed control of the five major West Sea islands -- proclamations that South Korea promptly rejected because it doesn't recognize the North Korean government as legitimate. "According to the UN convention, the two Koreas need to work out an agreement on waters in which their territorial rights overlap. For that to happen, South Korea must accept North Korea as a proper nation, but our Constitution doesn't see it that way." There are other points of contention relative to the West Sea. Seoul and Beijing have repeatedly held talks to try and reach agreement on a mutual boundary for their exclusive economic zones, but that's not their only headache. "There is an increasing number of so-called maritime militia in China. These are fishermen who are highly trained to use military weaponry, hence they're operating in a gray zone. They don’t use military vessels, so we can’t say whether we should use peacetime or wartime strategies, but they can always be used for real operations." Meanwhile, some experts speculate that patient negotiations with North Korea could result in a win-win situation for all involved. "Chinese vessels have purchased fishing rights in North Korea's West Sea territory... and are using the dubious situation along the Northern Limit Line to their advantage. There's no clear-cut way to deal with this problem directly. But if the two Koreas agreed on some way to share the economic zone near the NLL, that could also indirectly solve the problem of Chinese fishing boats." While the South Korean lives lost near the Northern Limit Line have come as the result of North Korean munitions, it also seems hard to deny that they are, in a sense, victims of a growing international trend that values exclusivity over sharing and mutual benefit -- a trend that, tragically, has resulted in greater disorder in the West Sea. South Korea vs North Korea: vessels exchange fire near disputed sea border

00:55
South and North Korea exchanged fire Tuesday morning after a North Korean vessel crossed a disputed sea border off the peninsula’s west coast, near Yeonpyeong Island in the Yellow Sea. The exchange of fire took place at around 9:50 a.m. when the North Korean patrol boat crossed the so-called Northern Limit Line (NLL), which acts as the de facto sea border between the two countries. To force the vessel to retreat, the South Korean boat issued warning messages and fired a warning shot, the Korea Herald reported. Instead of backing down, the North Korean boat fired back which forced the South Korean vessel to open fire again. The exchange of gunfire lasted about 10 minutes in total. The North Korean vessel eventually made a retreat. The vessels did not sustain damage as neither side had aimed its shots, the Korea Herald reported. According to Reuters, North Korean vessels frequently cross the NLL, as the country refuses to recognize it as the maritime border. The NLL was drawn by the U.S.-led United Nations Command at the end of the Korean War that lasted from 1950 to 1953. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Korean Coast Guard seizes two Chinese fishing boats in West Sea

00:44
쇠창살로 무장한 불법 중국어선 2척 나포 South Korea's Coast Guard has seized two Chinese boats fishing illegally in Korean waters. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries says the boats were caught in the early hours of Saturday morning near Heuksando Island in the West Sea. The boats were authorized to fish in Korea's Exclusive Economic Zone,... but they had well exceeded their catch limit. Officials say iron spikes were attached to the boats to make it more difficult for the Coast Guard to board the vessels. The crews are currently being questioned and may be required to pay a fine. The Korean government has strengthened measures against illegal fishing after another Chinese boat rammed into and sank a Korean Coast Guard speedboat earlier this month. N. Korea could deploy multiple rocket launchers in West Sea border area

北, 연평도

00:56
North Korea may be developing a new threat to security on the peninsula... South Korean military officials report the regime is building a military facility on an island just north of the heavily guarded inter-Korean border in the West Sea. The officials say the site has been under construction since March...and is now home to five bunker-like camps. Pyongyang may install 122-milimeter multiple rocket launchers... or use the bunkers as guard posts. Although Seoul says it can strike back with Spike missiles already in the region,... military tensions are bound to escalate if the facility becomes operational,... as the regime′s artillery will be able to target nearby South Korean islands. The area has often been a source of conflict between the two Koreas. In 2010, two civilians and two military officers died after Pyongyang shelled Yeonpyeong-do island.

5 S. Korean islands in West Sea home to rich geological heritage

01:31
서해 5도는 '10억 년 지질유산 보물섬' Five West Sea islands administrated by Korea are home to unique geological formations created one billion years ago. These islands are in the limelight as candidates for national geoparks. Park Se-young has more. This rock formation named 'Dumujin' on Baekryongdo Island is a result of sandy sediments being heated and pressured a billion years ago. The island is also home to basaltic rocks, …which have weathered and turned yellow due to their high magnesium content. The Kongdol seashore is covered by round pebbles, formed by the break-down of quartzite in the soil. Sagot Beach was once used as a natural airstrip due to the hardness of the sand. And Socheongdo Island, where Korea's oldest fossils have been found, is home to the Bunbawi Rock, named for its white, chalky color. The different layers and wave patterns of rocks at Nongyeo Beach provide a window back through one billion years of history. The Seopungbaji Rock in Daecheongdo Island was named as such because it blocks the wind that blows from China to the West Sea. "Baekryongdo, Daecheongdo and Socheongdo islands are not widely known for their rich geological heritage. We will work towards sustainable development by getting them certified as national geoparks in July." Ten sights on the five islands will also apply to become UNESCO Global Geopark sites. 1st West Sea Defense Day Observed in S. Korea: On-set interview

07:37
제1회 서해수호의 날 대담 For a more in-depth look into this newly observed "West Sea Defense Day" and its significance, we're joined live in the studio by Kim Seok-hyang, Professor of North Korean Studies at Ewha Womans University. Professor Kim, welcome to the program. Before we get into anything else, why don't we first touch upon the significance of this newly-observed "West Sea Defense Day." Tomorrow, March 26th, marks the 6th anniversary of North Korea's torpedoing of the South Korean warship Cheonan. President Park sent out a strong message to the North on this day. What is your assessment of the current cross-border relations on the Korean peninsula? South Korea has maintained a strong stance against North Korean provocations recently... in fact, stronger than ever before... highlighted by the suspension of the inter-Korean joint industrial complex in Kaesong. In your view, is this the right direction that the administration is heading? Despite a series of multilateral and unilateral sanctions that have been deemed unprecedented in strength... North Korea continues to launch provocative actions and verbal attacks. What is North Korean leader Kim Jong-un thinking right now? What's running through the mind of Kim? Global leaders are set to meet in Washington later this month for the Nuclear Security Summit. Regional experts have forecast bilateral and trilateral summit talks between Seoul and Beijing, Seoul and Washington, and Seoul, Washington and Beijing. If those summits are realized, what are some key goals that South Korea should try to achieve throught the summit talks? Kim Seok-hyang, Professor of North Korean Studies at Ewha Womans University... thank you, indeed, for speaking with us tonight. We appreciate it. N. Korea continues drill near de-facto maritime border in West Sea

北, 오후 7시10분

And today, once again,... North Korea fired artillery shells into the West Sea... near the de-facto maritime border known as the Northern Limit Line. The South Korean military says the North began the drill at 7:10 p.m. on Thursday,... though none of the shells landed on the south side of the highly-patrolled waters. No clashes have been reported as of yet. Pyongyang notified Seoul of the drill Wednesday, before firing off some 130 shells. The regime said the drill will continue until Friday.

북한 단속정 서해 NLL 침범... 경고사격에 퇴각 Two North Korean vessels crossed the Northern Limit Line near Yeonpyeong-do Island in the West Sea, at around 7:30 AM, Korea time this morning. Seoul's Defense Ministry says... the patrol boat and fishing boat retreated northward from the maritime border... after the South Korean Navy fired several warning shots. The South Korean military has been put on alert given the heightened tension on the peninsula. North Korea's West Sea Barrage (dam)

01:51
Did you know a barrage is a type of dam which consists of a line of large gates that can be opened or closed to control the amount of water passing the dam? Neither did I, but we got to tour North Korea's West Sea barrage near Nampho. This video shows a model of it that I recorded in the way I love to record models like this -- like we were flying through it. North Korea makes tons of models like this and dioramas. I'm not sure why. You'll see more of them in other videos. I took this video in a presentation hall near the barrage. 서해 NLL 해역 '인공어초' 추가 설치…중국어선 불법조업 방지 South Korea plans to install additional artificial reefs near the western maritime border with North Korea to stop Chinese boats fishing illegally in Korean waters. The Incheon Metropolitan City government says it will install artificial reefs around the five northwestern border islands in the West Sea, including Baengnyeong-do and Daecheong-do. The central government and Incheon have placed about 800 man-made underwater structures in West Sea since 2013. N. Korean boat comes close to violating western sea border

"北 경비정 연평도 인근

00:43
We begin with a North Korean patrol boat... that came very close to violating the de facto maritime border with South Korea this morning. The South Korean navy says the boat was spotted approaching the Northern Limit Line in the West Sea near Yeonpyeong-do Island at around 10:40 a.m., and came within three kilometers of the border at one point. The boat turned back... after South Korea′s navy issued verbal warnings there was no exchange of fire. This comes as naval boats from both Koreas exchanged warning fire near the same area last month... after a North Korean patrol boat crossed the maritime border. No casualties were reported.

S. Korea -U.S. conducts joint naval drill in the West Sea

01:39
"北도발시 강력 응징"…한미 해군, 서해수호 연합훈련 As the first West Sea Defense Day was marked on land, at sea... a South Korea, U.S. joint naval drills were conducted... showcasing the rock hard alliance between the two countries. Our national defense correspondent Kim Hyun-bin takes us to the West Sea. A North Korean submarine has been detected soon after the South Korean anti-submarine Linx helicopter is dispatched. The helicopter drops a Deeping Sonar to find the exact location of the submarine. Once the location is pinpointed, South Korean destroyers drop several depth charges and blow up the submarine. In retaliation, the enemy's special operation forces conduct a naval infiltration. Targets are locked...and South Korea and U.S. vessels fire off heavy artillery and sink Pyongyang's air cushion vehicles. This is all part of a joint naval drill between Seoul and Washington being held in the West Sea. "We have inherited the will of our fellow soldiers who lost their lives defending the West Sea. If North Korea provokes again we will sternly response with our firepower." . The exercise was conducted marking the first West Sea Defense Day and similar exercises were also held in the East and South Seas. A total of 28 vessels took part in the drills including the USS Fitzgerald along with South Korea's destroyer Sejong the Great. Against the backdrop of the joint naval exercises, the two allies pledged to secure the maritime sovereignty of South Korea and to maintain the highest readiness to counter any threat or provocation from the North. The Nampho Dam, also known as the West Sea Barrage, is a barrage located 15 km west of the special city of Nampho, North Korea. The loco, a Mika 6021, is very slow. The energy crisis reared its ugly head even on this day.The "coal" used, which had a consistency of topsoil rather than real coal, probably hadn't even enough calories to be used for potted plants.

S. Korea-U.S. forces mark success JLOTS drill in West Sea

한미 안면도서 대규모 합동 해안양륙

South Korea and the U.S. are conducting... sea-to-shore logistics drills in the West Sea,... in an effort to improve work and cooperation between their joint forces. This year... they say their biggest obstacle was also their biggest accomplishment... which was adjusting to changing tides in treacherous waters. Connie Kim has this report. After UN Supreme Commander for Allied Powers General Douglas MacArthur made an Incheon landing during the Korean War to repel North Korean forces pushing south down the Korean Peninsula,... the U.S. supported its soldiers by transporting equipment, food and vehicles through logistics-over-the shore operations discharging cargo from ships anchored offshore. With the two Koreas still technically at war, South Korea and the U.S. are conducting a Combined Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore Exercise at Anmyeon Beach on the country′s west coast. About 17-hundred army personnel from both sides have installed temporary port facilities and unloaded cargo there to improve sea-to-coast logistic support capabilities and communication in case of emergency situations. It′s the second time for the two countries to conduct a Combined/JLOTS exercise in the region. ″The difference between this exercise and the last one that was held is the sheer size of the operation.″ The trickiest part of this year′s exercise was adjusting to the big fluctuation in the tidal currents and shallow rise of the beach. ″The vehicles behind me are coming onto land from the U.S. Army′s longest temporary floating pier. Laid out flat it comes in at 540 meters long.″ It marked the first successful connection of a floating pier on Korea′s west coast the result of extensive planning between the two sides. ″Working in this environment with the tidal flat, with the tidal surge over the mud flats was extremely challenging. But I′m happy to report we succeeded we did it.″ In the face of continuing provocations from North Korea and regional security a major issue, the South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command plans to further develop operational capabilities in the Korean Theater of Operation by increasing testing and proficiency of JLOTS operations.
