Career Advice : How to Become a Database Administrator or DBA: Career Guidance animation videos

06:47
Career Advice : How to Become a Database Administrator or DBA: Career Guidance animation videos What is a database? Companies storing vast quantities of data use databases which are looked after by DBA's. This short, animated video will give you a high level overview of this role. This video is suitable for career seekers and anyone else wanting an overview/description of this role. We at funza have interviewed professionals regarded as experts in their domain and come up with this video. It focuses on providing answers to these questions: a. Overview of the role b. Requirements of the role c. Joys of the role d. Challenges of the role e. An average day f. Future prospects References: http://www.geteducated.com/career-center/detail/computer-scientist-and-database-administrator http://money.usnews.com/careers/best-jobs/database-administrator Overview: Let us understand the term Database administrator by observing an activity most of us indulge in. Let me explain the concept by mapping it to a common activity -The activity is withdrawing money from a bank. While you are withdrawing money, there are quite a few things happening in the background. Thousands of other customers may be doing the same thing, and this, is not affecting your session.and this is not affecting you in any way. ACCESS to your data is IMPORTANT where banking is concerned. You could ask your bank for past account transactions, and the bank has has an obligation to provide it. Since banking is a frequent activity, performance is taken for granted. When you are at an ATM, for example, you expect your transaction to be completed in a short period of timequickly. Now let us look at things from a banks perspective. What we are seeing here is a vast quantity of data that the bank has to store and provide its customers.. This data is stored on one or more DATABASES. But it is as we saw, it's much more than just DATA.. There is the concept of concurrency where data can be accessed by multiple customers. The concept of data security, where your data is protected The concept of performance where data is accessible in acceptable time frames. data can only be seen by you. Performance and high availability, where data is always available. Data and the this extra functionality around data are is made possible by a DBMS or data base management system. And the people responsible for managing a DBMS are DBA's or database administrators. What does a DBA Do? Now any company that needs to store vast quantities of data will use one or more databases. Thus, databases are present in a wide spectrum of companies. And not surprisingly these companies recruit DBA's to look after this data. DBAs are involved in a variety of activities: a. They install and maintain databases. b. They upgrade databases to newer versions when available c. They take backups of databases so data can be recovered if a system crashes d. They also export data across databases Monitoring databases is another component of a DBAs average day. They run tests to measure the health of a database. For example databases can fill up which means that no more information can be added. When this happens work can grind to a halt. Similarly performance can become an issue resulting in Calls to Customer Service Agents which companies never want. So this means that a DBA has to also be a problem solver DBAs also plan and implement security measures to safeguard databases. As a customer you would not want your banking or medical records to fall into wrong hands. Lastly DBAs spend a substantial amount of time in meetings with company management and vendors.

Oracle Resource Manager Queue and Switch Behavior

13:12
Oracle Resource Manager (RM) allows for both session queueing and switching of sessions among groups, but these functionalities when put together may not add up to the full user experience an organization desires because session switching after long running queries is back to the group the user had at the start of the session, not to the group from which the most recent switch took place. An enhancement to the product may be needed. Ideas welcome at [email protected]

We can also say that SQL tables are kind of data structure which are used by database for efficient storage of data. To create a table in our database we use SQL CREATE TABLE command. SQL CREATE TABLE is a type of DATA DEFINITION LANGUAGE also known as DDL. To Create a table in your schema you will require CREATE TABLE system privilege. In our future videos we will see what are system and object privileges and how to grant them to a user. Today for this video we will be using Sample schema HR which already has all the necessary privileges. Ohk Let's see the syntax. CREATE TABLE table name ( column name1 Data-Type(size), column name2 Data-Type(size), ..... ); CREATE TABLE is an oracle reserved word or say an Oracle key word whereas There are 3 different ways of creating a table in Oracle database. Creating a table using Command Line Interface (CLI) in Oracle database For demonstrating how to create table in oracle database using CLI, I'll be using Command prompt. Thats how we create table using command prompt. you can check your table structure by DESCRIBE command for that just write DESC and your table name. Like this Another way of creating a table is by using Graphic user interface (GUI) in Oracle database To demonstrate how to create table using GUI we will use SQL developer. Lets open our SQL developer I am connected to HR schema if you do not know how to create a connection to database using SQL developer please watch my oracle database tutorial 4 that explains database connectivity using SQL developer and command prompt. Link for this video is in the description below. So lets create a table. Creating a table using SQL developer is very easy we do not have to fire any query here. Let's start First of all right click on your connection in which you want to create a table and choose schema browser. This will open a separate schema browser pane or you can expend your connection by clicking this + sign and then right click on table and choose New Table. However I prefer working with schema browser so let's skip to schema browser pane here from the first drop-down list you can choose connection name and in the second drop down list you can choose what database objects you want to work with we want to create a table thus I'll choose table and then click this arrow here and choose option for new table Ok we have created a table wizard first of all give a unique name to your table and add some column as well. For this, click the green plus button. Now we already have a column so give it some name. Also choose a datatype from the list and specify any size you can check this not null column if in case you want to make this a mandatory column you can also specify default value and constraint If you want to make this column a primary key you can click here In my future video i'll show you what are these constraints and different ways of applying them on a column in a table. for this video we will concentrate on create table only so when you are done with all your columns click ok Thats your table You can double click on your table here and can see its structure. Thats it

Should I Learn Oracle or MySQL?

02:20
Should I learn Oracle or MySQL? MySQL is a popular open source database, but Oracle seems like the default database I see in use. Oracle is more expensive to implement and to train in. The certifications are like Microsoft's examinations, in that the classes and tests cost more. Then I need to go with MySQL. Not so fast. Popular should equal more job opportunities. MySQL has stronger database authentication based on the person's location. However, Oracle has corporate support to assist you with any problems you have. Which database do you think is better? Oracle does have a number of superior database management tools like rman, dataguard, internal job scheduling and queues. Oracle also has a more mature stored procedure language compared to MySQL. Stored procedures make it a lot easier to add verification logic and corrections to your database, instead of reprogramming the application that relies on the database. MySQL originally didn't have stored procedures or the rich programming environment Oracle did. However, MySQL is catching up. I know that a lot of companies like Oracle's hot backups so that restorations are faster in case of database failure, and the Real Application Clusters that lets your users search several servers at once is a good value. All of that is why Oracle is so often used, especially by big companies. Where is MySQL used? MySQL is free to a lot of non-profits and non-commercial groups. So it is popular at small charities and schools. It sounds like I need to learn Oracle just to gain access to the higher paying jobs, since non-profits don't pay much. Or you could learn Microsoft SQL. I'm not that desperate. Oh, come on. You could manage Microsoft databases on Microsoft Windows servers if you learn Microsoft SQL. I'd rather work for minimum wage at a non-profit with MySQL than MSSQL.

Database Tutorial 34 - What is an Oracle instance?

04:35
Video 34 What is an Oracle instance? - Database Tutorial 34 Let us just say that you click that NOTEPAD icon in your PC. What does it do? It opens a process in the memory for NOTEPAD. That is it. Did it open a file? No. It did not open a file because we did not tell it to open a file. So this is just an empty memory process running in the RAM of the computer. Let me call this as an instance. So we have an instance of Notepad running. Oracle also functions in the same way. During the startup, it starts up an instance first. This contains a bunch of memory processes. The configuration of those are determined by the parameter file.

Top Oracle DBA Interview Questions & Answer 1. Oracle DBA Characteristics Criteria Result Main storage structures Logical and Physical Architecture Grid architecture ACID Compliance Fully compliant Data stored as Data blocks, extents, segments and table spaces 2. What is Oracle? Oracle is a company. Oracle is also a database server, which manages data in a very structured way. It allows users to store and retrieve related data in a multi user environment so that many users can concurrently access the same data. All this is accomplished while delivering high performance. A database server also prevents unauthorized access and provides efficient solutions for failure recovery. A standby database is a database replica created by taking a backup of a primary database. 3. What is a Oracle Database? Oracle provides software to create and manage the Oracle database. The database consists of physical and logical structures in which system, user, and control information is stored. The software that manages the database is called the Oracle database server. Collectively, the software that runs oracle and the physical database are called the Oracle database system. A database buffer cache stores the data in memory for quicker access. The redo logs track and store all the changes made to the database. A Data Guard ensures data protection and high availability of data and control file records the physical structure of the database. Click on the above link to read more and to become a Oracle DBA. 4. What are the roles of DBA? DBA has the authority to create new users, remove existing users or modify any of the environment variables or privileges assigned to other users. • Manage database storage • Administer users and security • Manage schema objects • Monitor and manage database performance • Perform backup and recovery • Schedule and automate jobs 5. What are different Oracle database objects? • TABLES • VIEWS • INDEXES • SYNONYMS • SEQUENCES • TABLESPACES 6. What are the benefits of ORDBMS? The objects as such can be stored in the database. The language of the DBMS can be integrated with an object- oriented programming language. The language may even be exactly the same as that used in the application, which does not force the programmer to have two representations of his objects. 7. What is an Oracle index? An index is an optional structure associated with a table to have direct access to rows, which can be created to increase the performance of data retrieval. Index can be created on one or more columns of a table. 8. What are the Common Oracle DBA Tasks? As an Oracle DBA, you can expect to be involved in the following tasks: • Installing Oracle software • Creating Oracle databases • Performing upgrades of the database and software to new release levels • Starting up and shutting down the database • Managing the database’s storage structures • Managing users and security • Managing schema objects, such as tables, indexes, and views • Making database backups and performing recovery when necessary • Proactively monitoring the database’s health and taking preventive or corrective action as required • Monitoring and tuning performance In a small to midsize database environment, you might be the sole person performing these tasks. In large enterprise environments, the job is often divided among several DBAs, each with their own area of specialty, such as the database security administrator or database tuning expert. 9. List out the Tools for Administering the Database? The following are some of the products, tools, and utilities you can use in achieving your goals as a database administrator. -Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) The Oracle Universal Installer installs your Oracle software and options. It can automatically launch the Database Configuration Assistant to install a database. -Database Configuration Assistant (DBCA) The Database Configuration Assistant creates a database from templates that are Oracle supplied, or you can create your own. It enables you to copy a preconfigured seed database, thus saving the time and effort of customizing and generating a database from scratch. -Database Upgrade Assistant This tool guides you through the upgrade of your existing database to a new Oracle release. -Oracle Net Manager This tool guides you through your Oracle Net network configuration. -Oracle Enterprise Manager The primary tool for managing your database is Oracle Enterprise Manager, a web-based interface. After you have installed the Oracle software, created or upgraded a database, and configured the network, you can use Oracle Enterprise Manager as the single interface for managing your database. In addition, Oracle Enterprise Manager also provides an interface for performance advisors and an interface for Oracle utilities such as SQL*Loader and Recovery Manager.

To create a new table, enter the keywords create table followed by the table name, followed by an open parenthesis, followed by the first column name, followed by the data type for that column, followed by any optional constraints, and followed by a closing parenthesis. It is important to make sure you use an open parenthesis before the beginning table, and a closing parenthesis after the end of the last column definition. Make sure you seperate each column definition with a comma. All SQL statements should end with a ";". The table and column names must start with a letter and can be followed by letters, numbers, or underscores - not to exceed a total of 30 characters in length. Do not use any SQL reserved keywords as names for tables or column names (such as "select", "create", "insert", etc). Data types specify what the type of data can be for that particular column. If a column called "Last_Name", is to be used to hold names, then that particular column should have a "varchar" (variable-length character) data type. Does Your Job Scheduler Make Good Decisions? The Importance of Job Queues.

05:45
Learn which job queue features are important in a workload scheduler. For more info: http://www.helpsystems.com/skybot/resources/articles/job-scheduler-job-queues There are a few qualities you want everyone working within your company to have. They should be able to prioritize a workload, utilize resources effectively, and shift tactics based on a changing situation. These traits are as important in your workload automation solution as they are in your employees. In this episode of “No-Stress Job Scheduling,” Jared Dahl introduces us to job queues and the job queue features your enterprise scheduling software should include to allow it to make the best decisions about when to execute each job. What is a Job Queue? At some point your enterprise job scheduler decides to run a job. This could be because it’s a certain time of day or because some other requirement has been met. The scheduler then puts the job into a job queue, where it waits until the scheduler decides to execute it. There are many reasons the job may not be executed immediately. What is an API?

03:25
What exactly is an API? Finally learn for yourself in this helpful video from MuleSoft, the API experts. https://www.mulesoft.com/platform/api The textbook definition goes something like this: “An application programming interface (API) is a set of routines, protocols, and tools for building software applications. An API expresses a software component in terms of its operations, inputs, outputs, and underlying types. An API defines functionalities that are independent of their respective implementations, which allows definitions and implementations to vary without compromising each other. A good API makes it easier to develop a program by providing all the building blocks. APIs often come in the form of a library that includes specifications for routines, data structures, object classes, and variables. In other cases, notably SOAP and REST services, an API is simply a specification of remote calls exposed to the API consumers. An API specification can take many forms, including an International Standard, such as POSIX, vendor documentation, such as the Microsoft Windows API, or the libraries of a programming language, e.g., the Standard Template Library in C++ or the Java APIs. An API differs from an application binary interface (ABI) in that an API is source code-based while an ABI is a binary interface. For instance POSIX is an API, while the Linux Standard Base provides an ABI”. To speak plainly, an API is the messenger that runs and delivers your request to the provider you’re requesting it from, and then delivers the response back to you. To give you a familiar example, think of an API as a waiter in a restaurant. Imagine you’re sitting at the table with a menu of choices to order from, and the kitchen is the provider who will fulfill your order. What’s missing is the critical link to communicate your order to the kitchen and deliver your food back to your table. That’s where the waiter (or API) comes in. ”AHEM” The waiter takes your order, delivers it to the kitchen, and then delivers the food (or response) back to you. (Hopefully without letting your order crash if designed correctly) Now that we’ve whetted your appetite, let’s apply this to a real API example. In keeping with our theme, let’s book a flight to a culinary capital – Paris. You’re probably familiar with the process of searching for airline flights online. Just like at a restaurant, you have a menu of options to choose from ( a dropdown menu in this case). You choose a departure city and date, a return city and date, cabin class, and other variables (like meal or seating, baggage or pet requests) In order to book your flight, you interact with the airline’s website to access the airline’s database to see if any seats are available on those dates, and what the cost might be based on certain variables. But, what if you are not using the airline’s website, which has direct access to the information? What if you are using online travel service that aggregates information from many different airlines? Just like a human interacts with the airline’s website to get that information, an application interacts with the airline’s API. The API is the interface that, like your helpful waiter, runs and and delivers the data from that online travel service to the airline’s systems over the Internet. It also then takes the airline’s response to your request and delivers right back to the online travel service . And through each step of the process it facilitates that interaction between the travel service and the airline’s systems - from seat selection to payment and booking. So now you can see that it’s APIs that make it possible for us all to use travel sites. They interface with with airlines’ APIs to gather information in order to present options back to us The same goes for all interactions between applications, data and devices - they all have API’s that allow computers to operate them, and that's what ultimately creates connectivity. API’s provide a standard way of accessing any application, data or device whether it is shopping from your phone, or accessing cloud applications at work. So, whenever you think of an API, just think of it as your waiter running back and forth between applications, databases and devices to deliver data and create the connectivity that puts the world at our fingertips. And whenever you think of creating an API, think MuleSoft.

Part 11 Real time example for right join

Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2014/06/part-11-real-time-example-for-right-join.html In my opinion this is a very good sql server interview question. Here are the sequence of questions, one of our Youtube channel subscribers faced in a sql server interview. Question 1: Can you list different types of JOINS available in SQL Server Answer: Inner Join, Left Join, Right Join, Full Join and Cross Join Question 2: Can you tell me the purpose of Right Join? Answer: Right Join returns all rows from the Right Table irrespective of whether a match exists in the left table or not. Question 3: Can you give me an example? Answer: Consider Departments and Employees tables. In this case we use RIGHT JOIN To retrieve all Department and Employee names, irrespective of whether a Department has Employees or not. Select DepartmentName, EmployeeName From Employees Right Join Departments On Employees.DepartmentID = Departments.DepartmentID Question 4: I accept you have understood the purpose of Right Join. Based on the above 2 tables, can you give me any other business case for using Right Join. At this point the candidate being interviewed, had no other answer and he simply told the interviewer he can't think of anything else. The good news is that, inspite of not answering the last question, the candidate got this Job. The candidate then emailed me and asked, what do you think that interviewer might be looking for here? Here is what I think the interviewer is looking for. I may be wrong. If you can think of anything else, please feel free to leave a comment so it could help someone else. Another business case for using RIGHT JOIN on the above 2 tables is to retrieve all the Department Names and the total number of Employees with in each department. SQL Query with Right Join Select DepartmentName, Count(Employees.DepartmentID) as TotalEmployees From Employees Right Join Departments ON Departments.DepartmentID = Employees.DepartmentID Group By DepartmentName Order By TotalEmployees

Register here for FREE ACCESS to our BIG Data & Hadoop Training Platform: http://promo.skillspeed.com/big-data-hadoop-developer-certification-course/ This is a short video presentation on roles and responsibilities of a Database Administrator (DBA) and the Big Data challenge. It showcases the advantages of Hadoop and how a DBA can create valuable insights via Hadoop. The agenda for this session is as follows: ✓ What does a Database Administrator do? ✓ Limitations faced by DBAs - Big Data and DBA ✓ How Hadoop solves these limitations ✓ Hadoop DBA Professional - Career Path ---------- What does a Database Administrator do? A Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for ensuing the efficient, secure and continuous operation of one or more database management systems (DBMS) in an organization. While users are most often doing their work on “front end” applications like links and forms in a web browser or mobile app, those “front end” applications in turn feed data to a “back end” DBMS and retrieve data from the back end DBMS. A DBA is important to an organization because any lapse in the DBMS will result in non-functioning of applications, thus huge losses to organizations. ---------- Why Database Administrators should shift to Hadoop? Here are the important limitations faced by DBA Professionals: 1. Managing Unstructured Data 2. Horizontal Scalability in terms of Data Sources 3. Cost Effectiveness of traditional DBA Tools 4. Security Issues 5. Ability to perform Real Time Analysis ---------- Upgrade from DBA to Hadoop - Hadoop for DBAs Here are the list of reasons as to why Hadoop is essential for a DBA Professional: ⇒ Organizational Level - BIG Data Analytics Data is generated in huge volumes say for example in petabytes or zeta bytes which is rich and has potential to be harnessed. This unstructured data in form of images, audio and other forms is difficult to process. Organizations today have started adopting Hadoop in order to perform real time analysis and utilize data from these complex sources; that is unstructured data which forms a major chunk of their data collection. Added to that Organizations are using Hadoop not only to save on server costs but to create breakthroughs and innovations. ⇒ Individual Level - Career in Hadoop By deploying Hadoop to harness unstructured data, DBA Professionals can play a vital role to improve business operations. Hadoop allows DBA professionals with superior data processing and storage capabilities. ---------- Skillspeed is a live e-learning company focusing on high-technology courses. Oracle in Focus: Cloud, Infrastructure, Database and Platform (CXOTalk #261)

47:47
What is Oracle and where do its software, database, and cloud products stand today in relation to cloud technology and big data? Three prominent analysts – Mike Fauscette, chief research officer at G2 Crowd; Liz Forrester, vice president and primary analyst at Forrester; and Neil Ward-Dutton, co-founder and research director at MDW Advisors – talk with CXOTalk to place Oracle in focus. For more information see, https://www.cxotalk.com/episode/oracle-focus-industry-analysts-view Fauscette is the chief research officer at G2 Crowd, a platform and community where people can connect and share experiences about business software. Fauscette previously spent ten years as an executive and senior analyst at technology market research firm IDC, where he led worldwide business software research. He is also a published author, blogger, photographer and accomplished public speaker on emerging trends in business software, business modernization and customer experience strategies. Herbert focuses on the technology services industry, helping clients navigate this fast-changing market and maximize the business value of their technology investments. As a principal analyst, she helps clients understand the key dynamics in the enterprise application services market and make smart technology sourcing decisions. Specific topics of focus include SaaS, SAP and Oracle Services, and services for cloud and mobile. She also advises technology and technology services vendors on market dynamics, buyer demands, competitive landscape, and go-to-market. Ward-Dutton is MWD Advisors' co-founder and Research Director, and is one of Europe’s most experienced and high-profile IT industry analysts. His areas of expertise include business process management (BPM), enterprise architecture (EA), Cloud computing and digital strategy. He also acts as an advisor to large organizations across a range of sectors and industries, including leading technology vendors. From the transcript: What are you seeing in the market with respect to Oracle today? Liz Herbert: (00:05:52) Sure. One of the things we've seen is that, like you said, they're one of the largest technology suppliers out there, and sometimes that means they're not the fastest. They don't necessarily take risks the way that some smaller and more startup-type companies do. For example, it's well known that Oracle was a bit late to the overall cloud competition that we see looming large in today's applications market, as well as platforms and infrastructure. (00:06:17) That said, when they invest, they go big. One of the things that's been notable about Oracle is that, where they're jumping into a new area of customer demand, they're able to put a significant amount of investment behind it. In fact, there's something very unique about the company, which we haven't really talked much about yet, but because Larry Ellison owns such a substantial part of the overall company, they're able to take decisions in a way that many other public companies of their size would not be able to. Neil Ward-Dutton: (00:08:45) Now on the platform side of things, fundamentally, my view is that Oracle's strategy is kind of defensive, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, nor is it surprising. Its position and its strategy is fundamentally about realizing that the center of gravity for the foreseeable future for new investments is going to be cloud. It's all about being there when customers want them to be there, to kind of minimize opportunities for customers to go anywhere else, to make sure that they always have something that they can offer customers when customers go to town and want to do things. Mike Fauscette: (00:21:48) I think it's an interesting point to say that customers and business, in general, change. We know, and you hear people talk about digital transformation. We think about platforms, and we think about this new way technology plays in business. It's much more into a competitive differentiator, a competitive advantage. It's something that companies that jump ahead can really leapfrog competition by using technology and people in the right sort of combinations. (00:22:22) Fundamentally, the way that companies think of what they want from the technology has started to shift. Now there's the conservative middle that'll follow that isn't out on the edge yet. You think about companies like Oracle, Salesforce, and others that have to be able to work in that environment. They have a business they have to maintain and, at the same time, they want to start to help those customers shift, move in the directions, and have the things available that can help them do that.
