C++ Stylistics

54:57
Google Tech Talks March, 5 2008 ABSTRACT Both by accident and by design, C++ supports a number of different styles and approaches to programming. Its evolution from C gives it obvious support for a procedural systems programming style based on C idioms, but past, present and future language support opens up a wealth of other approaches and idioms, including object-oriented programming, generic programming and some elements of functional programming. This diversity is both a strength and a weakness. It can lead to code that is crisp and well matched to its problem. But it can also lead to code that is at best considered an exercise in groundless post-modernism or, less favorably, an unmaintainable and incoherent mess. This talk examines some of the styles and approaches, including their key strengths and accidental complexities, as well as consequences of and techniques for combining them. Speaker: Kevlin Henney Kevlin Henney is an independent consultant and trainer based in Bristol, UK. Kevlin's work focuses on software architecture, programming languages and development process. He has been a columnist for various magazines and online publications, including SearchSoftwareQuality.com, The Register, C/C++ Users Journal, C++ Report, JavaSpektrum and Java Report. With Frank Buschmann and Doug Schmidt, he is coauthor of two volumes in the Pattern-Oriented Software Architecture series: A Pattern Language for Distributed Computing and On Patterns and Pattern Languages.

*Make sure to watch video until the end.* I have found myself taking too much inspiration from the work of Casey Neistat, meaning my work is not of my own but a poor imitation of his. To prevent this from happening in the future, I have made an 'ode to Casey' video, where i try and replicate his style as much as possible and get all Neistat stylistics out of my system. If you like, let Casey know i've done this by tweeting him / commenting on his vlogs. It would be amazing to have him respond to this video, and even more amazing if he doesn't find it insulting or plagiaristic. 89,16m² These Are Project Small Houses, Modern Ground Floor | Designs Of Modern Houses

10:29
These are project of a small, modern ground floor, which is a modification of the "House Under an Orange" designed jointly with the FB Fans. In the presented version, a single-garage garage was designed. The house is distinguished by impressive stylistics, the façades are finished with plaster in fashionable colors and varied with natural wood. The terrace zone with a pergola looks great, where residents can arrange a summer dining room and a seating area. The interior of the house has been functionally organized, and many glazings provide a large amount of natural light. The salon invites the family to relax in front of the home cinema, sliding terrace doors attractively open its space to the terrace and garden. In the central place of the day zone, next to a large window, there is a dining room, during receptions in a larger group, one can additionally extend the table. The kitchen section is separated by a multifunctional peninsula with a comfortable work top, a modern cooking zone and a breakfast bar. A handy larder has been designed by the kitchen, which will accommodate food supplies and preserves. Private rooms are the parents' bedroom with access to the terrace, a child's room, as well as a study located near the entrance, which can be used for the next bedroom. The utility program of the house is completed by two bathrooms, with a vestibule located in a boiler room, connected to the laundry function, from which a garage is available. "House under the Orange (G)" enlarges the collection appreciated by the Investors: designs of one-storey houses, it also belongs to the category: designs of small houses, designs of modern houses and designs of houses with a single-storey garage. 'Declarative Thinking, Declarative Practice' - Kevlin Henney [ ACCU 2016 ]

01:34:07
Do this, do that. Coding from assembler to shell scripting, from the mainstream languages of the last century to the mainstream languages now, is dominated by an imperative style. From how we teach variables – they vary, right? – to how we talk about databases, we are constantly looking at state as a thing to be changed and programming languages are structured in terms of the mechanics of change – assignment, loops and how code can be threaded (cautiously) with concurrency. Functional programming, mark-up languages, schemas, persistent data structures and more are all based around a more declarative approach to code, where instead of reasoning in terms of who does what to whom and what the consequences are, relationships and uses are described, and the flow of execution follows from how functions, data and other structures are composed. This talk will look at the differences between imperative and declarative approaches, offering lessons, habits and techniques that are applicable from requirements through to code and tests in mainstream languages.

GOTO 2013 • Worse Is Better, for Better or for Worse • Kevlin Henney

52:18
This presentation was recorded at GOTO Aarhus 2013 http://gotocon.com Kevlin Henney - Patterns, Programming, Practice and Process ABSTRACT Over two decades ago, Richard P Gabriel proposed the thesis of "Worse Is Better" to explain why some things that are designed to be pure and perfect are eclipsed by solutions that are seemingly limited and incomplete. This is not simply the observation that things that should be better are not, but that some solutions that were not designed to be the best were nonetheless effective and were the better option. We find many examples of this in software development, some more provocative and surprising than others. In this talk we revisit the original premise and question in the context of product development and user experience, challenging some common ideas of what delights the user, the customer and the market and what should (or should not) be simple in a product. https://twitter.com/gotocon https://www.facebook.com/GOTOConference http://gotocon.com

Kevlin Henney: Cool Code

04:00
In most disciplines built on skill and knowledge, from art to architecture, from creative writing to structural engineering, there is a strong emphasis on studying existing work. Exemplary pieces from past and present are examined and discussed in order to provoke thinking and learn techniques for the present and the future. Although programming is a discipline with a very large canon of existing work to draw from, the only code most programmers read is the code they maintain. They rarely look outside the code directly affecting their work. This talk examines some examples of code that are interesting because of historical significance, profound concepts, impressive technique, exemplary style or just sheer geekiness

Pinakotēka exhibition, office building 2000m2- Happy Art Museum

02:40
Pinakoteka Ltd. started its operations in October 30th by opening an exhibition named „Happy arts museum". Expositions throughout the exhibition sketched new vibes of quality while still proving and confirming the multi-functional possibilities offered by new premises of „Pinakoteka". The premises can easily satisfy any call for corporate gatherings, different type of art, music, media events etc. However, this organization faces some financial issues, as museums in Latvia are regarded as non-profit organizations. Right now Pinakoteka Ltd. is relating its future with local and international projects, with reflecting most important happenings in contemporary art. Museums of contemporary art have achieved some defined characteristics and stylistics which emphasizes the most suitable expressions of contemporary art itself. Pure, geometric lines together with discrete minimalism going hand in hand with the demands of functionality have appeared as dominant in recent contemporary art museums. Some similarities between exhibition halls around the Baltic and contemporary art museum of Helsinki, named KIASMA, can be found. Some very distinct parallels can be drawn with Pinokoteka as well; therefore assimilating Pinokoteka with other galleries, which can be proud of fulfilling esthetic and functional needs of process of reflecting arts. New media, which currently have taken a powerful role in addition to the traditional means of expressing art, are demanding high standards of museum premises and high quality of expositions. The three-storey building with large exhibition halls is easily fulfilling any needs of artist's conceptions. Pinokoteka as a building can accumulate loads of art-works, and then set them side to side in a manner, where the pieces of art are not competing with each other. In fact, they do the opposite- they are emphasizing and completing each other; therefore creating unforgettable experience, which to some extent are expressing minimalism. The style of minimalism demands for ascetic lines and monochrome gamma of colors; for that reason Pinakoteka has chosen to use black granite, grey concrete, and stainless steel as a core of the design of the building. A German construction company developed a high quality project of Pinakoteka. This project easily reaches the highest standards of European normative of building standards. The building itself is provided with up to date technologies- conditioning, ventilation communication channels, optical cable, underground parking lot and borehole aqueduct. The purposes of these technologies are to eliminate any distractions for art-lovers while they are enjoying the exhibition. Moreover, the radiators are not visible at all. Research made by the largest international exhibition organizer "Frankfurt messe gmbh" are stating that the best location for establishing a large district for international exhibitions and cultural activities in Northen Europe and Baltic countries is the location nearby Airport "Riga", as it is right next to an highway-Ulmana boulevard, airport Riga, five minutes from city center, five minutes from old town and five minutes from the very famous resort- Jurmala. The culture center of United States is currently being built next to Ulmana boulevard as well. The project was planned very precisely in collaboration with building company "XL grupa"; therefore Pinakoteka was built before USA culture's center and Frankfurts messe gmbh. In long run, regarding the successful operation of Pinakoteka the crucial role will be dealt to these two neighbors as they will attract a large movement of tourists toward this district. The rapid development of airport Riga will ensure the movement of transit-passengers in this district as well. In pursuit of strategic development Latvia is on its way of putting the Riga airport's district as one of the places of the city with the fastest development .Among the buildings, which represent prestigious brands, the building of "Happy art museum" brings a whole new accent and enforces the magnificent and urban building assembly of the new district and at the same time represents latest happenings in contemporary art.

Bringing Object-orientation to Security Programming (Mark S. Miller, Google)

This is talk 2/2 in a Lecture Series on Web Security by Google Research Scientist Mark S. Miller. It took place on October 7th at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Brussels, Belgium. Full details at: http://mobicrant-talks.eventbrite.com Abstract: Just as we should not expect our base programming language to provide all the data types we need, so we should not expect our security foundation to provide all the abstractions we need to express security policy. The answer to both is the same: We need foundations that provide simple abstraction mechanisms, which we use to build an open ended set of abstractions, which we then use to express policy. We show how to use EcmaScript 5 to enforce the security latent in object-oriented abstraction mechanisms: encapsulation, message-passing, polymorphism, and interposition. With these secured, we show how to build abstractions for confinement, rights amplification, transitive wrapping and revocation, and smart contracts. A NEW GRADE-A EXHIBITION AND CONFERENCE BUILDING The building is placed in a strategically advantageous location close to the Rīga International Airport and the Rīga-Jūrmala highway. The centre of Rīga and the spa town Jūrmala can both be reached within 10 minutes from the building. The three-floor exhibition and conference building has 2,100 m2 of floor space. It is open to the environment and designed on the basis of Japanese architectural styles -- concrete, glass and metal in five major exhibition halls (1,100 m2), large roof terraces (400 m2, helicopter landing possible), and a heated car parking area (600 m2). The building is divided up into two equal parts by the central stairwell. The halls on each floor can be accessed separately. THE DESIGN OF THE BUILDING The style of minimalism demands ascetic lines and monochrome gamma of colours; for that reason "Pinakoteka" has chosen to use black granite, grey concrete, and stainless steel as a core of the design of the building. A German construction company developed a high quality project of "Pinakoteka". This project easily reaches the highest standards of European building normatives. The building itself is provided with up-to-date technologies—conditioning, ventilation communication channels, optical cable, underground parking lot and borehole aqueduct. The purposes of these technologies are to eliminate any distractions for art-lovers while they are enjoying the exhibition. Moreover, the radiators are not visible at all. Museums of contemporary art have achieved some defined characteristics and stylistics which emphasize the expressions of contemporary art itself. Pure, geometric lines together with discrete minimalism going hand in hand with the demands of functionality have appeared as dominant in recent contemporary art museums. Some similarities between exhibition halls around the Baltic and contemporary art museum of Helsinki can be found. Pinokoteka can be proud of fulfilling aesthetic and functional needs in the process of reflecting the arts. All the facilities have state-of-the-art communications systems, major ventilation and air-conditioning systems, temperature regulation, a thorough fire prevention system, and high speed optical Internet for an unlimited number of users and webcams. This ensures the multifunctional use of the facilities for international culture and information projects. MAJOR AREAS OF OPERATION 1. International art exhibitions in co-operation with foreign cultural institutions represented in Latvia. 2. Exhibitions of the products of Latvian businesses.3. Conferences and seminars. 4. Auctions. 5. Sale of original and reproduced artworks. 6. Individual and corporate events. 7. Café and extensive outdoor terraces for the comfort of our clients. Possible uses of the building: 1. Rent offices for strategic neighbours of Airport ''Riga''. 2. Sell a part of the house or find investor, who is interested in this unique object.
 3. Exhibitions of the products of domestic and foreign companies, exhibitions of creative industries and artists, conferences, seminars (EXPO 2010). 4. Co-ordination and presentation of major construction projects related to the Rīga Airport at the building's offices and exhibition halls. 5. Offices for Latvian or foreign companies, with facilities for exhibitions, seminars and conferences, administrative offices, a café and outdoor terraces. We are looking for one or more strategic investors: A renter for the whole building or parts thereof or A buyer for the whole building or parts thereof Rental fee: 6 EUR m2 Purchase price: 2.5 Millions EUR (1.750.000 LVL) LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION... Research made by the largest international exhibition organizer "Messe Frankfurt GmbH" states that the best location for establishing a large centre for international exhibitions and cultural activities in Northern Europe and Baltic countries is the location close to Riga Airport, next to the highway—Ulmana boulevard, five minutes from city centre, five minutes from the old town and five minutes from the famous resort Jurmala.
